Would you homeschool your children?

Hi guys, if money wasn't an issue would you home-school your children?

If so what benefits would this have over contemporary schooling? If not what are the reasons for keeping your child at school?

No, I wouldn't.

I would send them to school so that they could form friendships, get taught by properly qualified teachers, and experience what the vast majority of other children do.
No nay never.
No way. Aside from any social aspects, I don't have the skills and knowledge to teach every single subject they would learn at school, the thought of me trying to teach art is a joke.
No. It should be made illegal IMO. Allowing parents to socially deprive their kids like that is horrendous.
Never because I believe it prevents them from developing social skills to a great extent. So many things you learn just from going to school, aside from the teaching - friendships, heartbreak, what people you should and shouldn't associate with etc.
I want to but my boyfriend doesn't.

I don't like how schools churn out nice little drones and stamp the individuality out of people. I also don't like the bullying culture, pathetic social norms and childish games. I hated school.

My boyfriend wants to give them the choice

I like the idea of it, but then I'd never really been aware of any adverse effects from it aside from if the parents don't set up some time where the kids could socialise with other children.

The one to one (or even one adult to a couple of kids) attention seems like it really helps home schooled children excel and become confident. But I don't think I could personally do it because I'd get too stir-crazy and would like to be working.
I would definitely consider it as an option. I was home educated myself, and I seem to have turned out alright. I am currently in sixth form (Home educated from age 7 to 16).

Home education provides several benefits, including greater freedom to pursue your interests, it can develop self study skills, (Which are extremely important) and you get to spend more time with your family. Also, the child (or children) are basically being taught one to one, which is very helpful.

A misconception is that home educated children find it harder to make friends. While this can be the case, if the child is able to join clubs or take part in other activities (Martial arts, Scouts etc) then they will make plenty of friends, so this isn't a problem.
No, I wouldn't.
I think that being able to be with other children your age will allow them to grow mentally. They can build friendships and kind of get a taste of life e.g. working with others. Obviously they'd have friends outside of school but it's to mix with other people.
As a parent you'd probably become quite stressed, especially when your child is young. When will you have time to work etc.?
Also, by the time your child gets to secondary school, take science as an example for experiments, you probably won't have as good facilities as the school.

IN FUTURE

I think you should offer them a choice.

A close friend was home educated till college and I feel really bad for him - he missed out on so much socially and says he wishes he'd been properly schooled. Some kids can socialise through clubs etc and his parents did provide those but he says it was no substitute for normality.
It really depends on the parent, I wouldn't see them as disadvantaged if me and/or my spouse home-schooled them, we'd do a far better job than a standard primary school, especially if you account for the 1-on-1 tuition aspect. Plus 'school' trips are easier to organise, you can do more engaging stuff if there's just one pupil.

Would never do it for secondary school though, we wouldn't have the knowledge required to teach them adequately

"Normality" isn't a good thing, normality is the sporty kids terrorising those of us who have an interest in art and refuse to play their popularity games to the point if severe depression.

I'd send them to college at 16, at that age kids aren't like that at college!

What about the benefits that home education can have...?

I agree with this. It's not just the "arty" kids though, it's usually anybody with half a brain that can get bullied.

I'd seriously consider home schooling my kids to be fair, I reckon I could give them a better education than my useless teachers did. I may have to have a private tutor for them but homeschooling is a viable option.

Yeah it is, and it's so sad. Education in the UK is awful.

i also font don't like how regimented it is. It should be tailored to the individual

Actually, my friend was bullied at college (and we go to a good one) and clearly had some "catching up" to do re: social skills despite being a very nice kid. We go to a good college too.

Unfortunately, life is full of social situations, and there are plenty of bullies even in the workplace and among adults. The sooner kids learn how to deal with both those who like them and those who don't the better.

I have no doubt my friend would've coped with the bullying much better had he not been home schooled.

Aware of those, wouldn't say it's worth the trade off.

What benefits would you say are so great?

I don't agree. No situation I've ever encountered outside of school has been like that. Id have been much happier being homeschooled.

Props to you if you would have  But bullying is common at college, university and in the "adult world" too - I do think kids need to learn to deal with it. If you start a thread asking if anyone was/has been bullied in any of those situations you'll probably get quite a few responses. Sad but not everyone grows up at 16 :s-smilie:

I do think you should offer your kids a choice at least. My friend often seems down about having not had a "normal" childhood or best friends etc. through school.
