OCEAN PARAD IS E-CH INA 2010

This is Xue Xiaolu’s first film as a director although she has had experience as a screenwriter.

The film centers on an ageing widower with a terminal illness (played by Jet Li) who is most

concerned about what will happen to his autistic son (played by Lunmei Kwai) when he dies.

As a young adult, the son is obsessed with swimming at the aquarium where the father

works. However the son has hardly any life skills: he can barely speak, he cannot take public

transport and he cannot feed himself. This last fact is shown very pointedly when the father

tries to teach him how to break an egg to cook his own breakfast.

The film is quite long, 106 minutes, but director Xue has sustained the urgency and anxiety

of the father’s struggle to find a way to provide a satisfactory life for his son when he is no

longer around to care for him. The theme of this film may not seem very appealing but

director Xue skillfully develops genuine empathy through attention to detail in everyday

tasks. A good example is the scene in which the father finally loses patience with his son

while trying to teach him how to mop the floor in the aquarium.

The supporting actors, a compassionate neighbor, an understanding aquarium owner and a

circus clown provide touches of humor and relief from what otherwise could be too

depressing. There were some moving scenes when an innocent relationship develops between

the clown, a very expressive, fun-loving, young girl, and the son, who struggles to release his

feelings.

If you are looking for escapism, adventure or romance, then this is not the film for you.

However, as an honest presentation of a common problem in modern society, it is well done

and likely to provoke a lot of soul-searching for many viewers.
