the main thing with downloading ive found is:

1) dont download films.. by films i mean 2hour things.. theyre bound to be full of crap and you can get tracked and sued for it (hapened to my sister, we got an email from our ISP saying some big american company would sue us if we didnt delet our accounts
2) dont SHARE your stuff... i know it sounds horrible but dont share your music with other people as then they will target you for sueing

OMG!!! lol i don't believe that no one at uni downloads porn!!! IT people must turn a blind eye 2 it...as long as its not illegal then they won't have a problem with it!

torrents worked fine for me. 100%. At the time I downloaded things like the
new series of Family Guy, American Dad etc... but movies would work too.

The IT service people on campus are good at helping you connect to the internet, useful for fools like me who come in complaining that their laptop won't work only to be told that I'd been putting in the wrong password :redface:

They also come out to the off campus residences in freshers' week to help people install the wireless network.

my laptop speakers should arrive tomorrow.. which is good as i have finished putting pretty much my entire cd collection on there, plus my mp3 collection, plus bits of other peoples cd collections

oh, and.... does anyone know what kind of cable we need to connect to the network in the bedrooms? a cable came with the laptop but i think it's just a modem cable (not having connected to a university network before) so i'd like to try and order the right one before i leave..

yeh that would probably be a modem cable included with your laptop. You want any standard UTP Patch Ethernet Cable (not crossover). Get a couple of metres as you dont know where the port is situated in the room...and doesnt restrict you.
Also you don't have to shell out loads on a branded cable. Belkin ones can be like £10 for 2 metres, when you can get an unbranded one online for like £2.50 for 10 metres!
