Potential mess up of AS results, what do I do?

Hello all

I have a very sharp feeling that I will be disappointed this results day.
If I potentially come out with C D D, do you think its worth carrying on?

I want to apply for a BEng or MEng at a Russell Group (potentially Manchester)

Much appreciated

Depends what subjects you're doing but to be honest I don't really think CDD will get you into a Russell Group University. :frown: I think unless you can pull it up hugely for A2 do you think you could manage to get BBC at A2? Maybe I'm being too harsh but that's my opinion on it. :frown:

But if you get BBC you're in with a chance: “But I can tell you now that I know Manchester took BBC students and some Russell Group universities took ACD students. We didn’t.”

Good luck mate!

Hello

Well it was partly because of the lack of work I did :frown:. I could potentially do a foundation year.

Would you not be willing to take a gap year? Apply once you have your A2 grades?

I've thought about an extra year at College, and start my AS this academic year.

Maybe I'm just worrying too much, I will just have to wait and see on results day.

Then again if I get BBD, then what would be your advice? The only subject I'm worried about is Physics.

Potential B in Maths and Business Studies.

Yeah that's something to consider :h:

Exactly, I did a lot better than I thought, you never really know!

If I got BBD, I would have applied anyway (and put myself in to resit a couple of modules) as you don't really have much to lose. If I didn't get any offers, I would just reapply for 2016 entry with my A2 grades and take a gap year

Two Bs would be pretty good :h: the only thing I'm wary of is the competitiveness of your course

if you're looking to go to oxbridge/imperial don't bother applying to them now, other than that i think you could rescue your a level next year

Nope definitely not Oxbridge haha.

Just a decent University like UoB or UoM.

I mean If I do get BBD, I could just resit a few modules next year and hope for the best.

Hi Incubator,

There are lots of options you might want to consider.

Here's a specialist article on The Student Room showing you exactly what you can do in this situation, and linking you to the best pages on this site where you can get help:

Hope this helps!

Thanks guys. How did you manage with results day? To be absolutely honest, I'm ****ting it.

1. You might get better grades than expected thanks to lower grade boundaries (for some subjects anyways)
2. Universities always make more offers than places. It is also common for many of them to make offers even though your predictions are slightly off / AS grades not up to standard compared to the average applicant since they may be more likely to firm them.

Personally i think you might as well give the application a go. There isnt really much harm in trying is there? - That is assuming your predictions are within reason of Manchesters entry requirement

I would apply for BEng. The entry requirements (and applicants for it) are generally lower than BEng. (If you do well in your first year, you can usually move to MEng)

Furthermore, you can also look at foundation years for Engineering.

Hi Jkizer,

If their entry requirements are AAB and I get BBD this year, is it worth applying?

I have a feeling my Physics teacher (no matter how well I do during the year) will only predict me a D. He is quite stubborn :frown:

Hey!

If you want an honest opinion, I wouldn't say that CDD would get you even close to a Russell Group, especially the fact that it was down to lack of effort so completely self-induced. However, you can save yourself with A2. BBB/BBC and you should be fine but I'd consider a Gap Year and then apply.

Good luck

Yup, I completely agree. Like I said, I either take an extra year in college, or I work my arse off at A2 & then hope for the best. [or take a foundation year]

I'm currently doing a 5 week Engineering summer placement, and planning to do some more work experience during the school half term.

I would say so. You say you are doing an engineering placement which is very good (Majority of students won't have experience since its very difficult to do so) plus extra work experience will work in your favour.

If you manage to write a decent PS plus get a half decent reference, i think you could get an interview at least.

One of my classmates were in a similar position to you. They got something like BBC/D in their main A2 subjects but still got an interview for Automotive engineering @ Lboro. The teacher may be first reluctant, but if you put the work in at the beginning, then you can persuade (He had to do a mock paper to try bump up in prediction) - If you manage to get something like AAC predictions or what not, worth a shot.

Oh I will make sure my PS is amazing! I have plenty of people to help me!

Also if I do get BBD (I will be over the moon btw) - I will just retake a module and then hope for the best

You could:
1) Carry on with A2 and retake AS modules. Possible but will require extra work.
2) Re-take Year 12 again
3) Take a gap year with your then achieved results
