Police refuse to quiz the unidentified MP, who allegedly gave a then school pupil a pill - when he awoke he was naked and felt he had been assaulted.

The former pupil who claims he was molested by a Coalition minister revealed the alleged attack left him suffering a lifetime of depression and suicide attempts.

And he accused police of being scared to quiz the politician because of his position in today’s Coalition after they revealed they had no plans to investigate a year after his allegation was made.

The alleged victim, who we are calling Thomas, told officers investigating historical sex abuse at his school that he was drugged by the minister when he was 14. He woke up naked in bed.

An inquiry into the Home Office's handling of child sex abuse claims in the 1980s has failed to uncover any of the missing documents that prompted the probe, BBC Newsnight has been told.

The inquiry centres on concerns the Home Office did not act on information passed on by Tory MP Geoffrey Dickens.

The inquiry's report is expected to criticise the department's archiving in the 80s and 90s, and dash hopes the so-called "Dickens' dossier" still exists.

The Home Office has refused to comment.

Labour MP John Mann said he was concerned that civil servants who dealt with the dossier at the time had not come forward to give evidence to Mr Wanless because they are forbidden to reveal information about it by the Official Secrets Act.

Mr Mann told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "I've spoken to a civil servant who saw the file at the time, back in the '80s, and had to sign the Official Secrets Act. Many more did as well, not just in the Home Office.

"While I understand the file is really a list of names and not much more than that, I've also spoken to a journalist who's still alive today - Don Hale - who was given a list of names, but more importantly a whole series of Home Office minutes of meetings looking into this issue, by the late Barbara Castle.

"All those files very quickly - a couple of days after he was given them by Barbara Castle - were seized by the security services and Special Branch.

"This information came to light to me after Wanless had finished his work."

Asked if he was impressed by Mr Wanless's investigation, Mr Mann said: " It doesn't seem to me it's getting anywhere near asking the questions. If one civil servant saw the file, and says many others did as well, and doesn't want to speak out because of the restrictions of the Official Secrets Act, then that's what Wanless needed to be asking questions about."

He added: "I'm aware of some of the names. They are not all household names. The well-known ones, it's inconceivable that there wouldn't be interest from the intelligence services, because they could be blackmailed. It would be improper for the Home Office not to pass that on at the time.

"There are ongoing police investigations into some of these people. I'm aware of at least seven prominent people where there are ongoing live police investigations, and there are other names given where there's not in my view sufficient evidence in themselves to launch anything other than asking around.

"With a number of them, victims have come forward and they are very prominent people. So the issue is not going to go away.

"There are civil servants, maybe retired now, who do know a lot and they have not come forward to Wanless, and that's a problem."

Ex-MI6 chief Peter Hayman named as VIP who sexually abused boys at Dolphin Square apartment complex near Parliament

It's like you people think friends have total knowledge on each other.

Do I know all of my friends' sexualities for certain? No.
Do I know all, or any, of their fetishes? No.
Do I know all of their secrets? No.
Do I know what they do 24/7? No.

I doubt Jimmy Saville went around bragging about touching children, so I don't see why you are attempting guilt by association.

I doubt the sexualities of your freinds could pose a security risk to the country or that you have the security services making sure they don't and reporting back to you, besides we already know Thatcher knew about some of them.

A review of the Home Office's handling of paedophile ring allegations in the 1970s, 80s and 90s has ruled it is impossible to say whether there was a cover-up.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: “It’s important [the report] says that there wasn’t a cover-up… some of the people who’ve been looking for conspiracy theories will have to look elsewhere.”

But speaking to BBC Radio 4's PM, Peter Wanless said David Cameron was "wrong" to say his report proved there was no cover-up.

"He can only say that into the registered filing system of the Home Office," he said.

"I think it's really important that no-one regards our piece of work as the beginning and end of all this.

The retired government worker told Radio 4's Today programme: 'Every quarter, the list of current grants that were up for consideration for financial support would be circulated through the office and I believe that I saw a copy of that which referred to the re-funding of PIE.

'It was an organisation that was campaigning for the reduction of the age of consent to four. I thought that was inappropriate and outrageous and for a government department to be funding it, I thought was wrong.

'I went to see my boss and he told me, firstly, that PIE was a legitimate campaigning organisation and it did have significant links to the National Council for Civil Liberties and other organisations that were recognised.

'Secondly, I was told that it was being funded a the request of Special Branch.'

Mr Hulbert's comments followed claims by an investigative journalist that Home Office papers he saw - which suggested an investigation into the alleged child abuse ring was later carried out - were seized by Special Branch.

Don Hale yesterday revealed he was given a bundle of documents which included the identities of senior politicians who were actively promoting the Paedophile Information Exchange by the late Labour minister Baroness Castle.

He said police later arrived at his newspaper office, pushed him against a wall and demanded to take possession of the dossier.

Police investigating allegations of historical sexual abuse are looking at information on "possible homicide".

Scotland Yard said officers working on Operation Fairbank, which is looking into claims there was a paedophile ring with links to government, became aware of the claims in recent weeks.

The force said detectives from its child abuse investigation command were working with homicide officers.

The new investigation is called Operation Midland.

Scotland Yard said in a statement: "Over the past month, detectives working on Operation Fairbank within the Met's specialist crime and operations have been made aware of allegations concerning serious non-recent sexual abuse, said to have occurred over 30 years ago.

"Our inquiries into this, over subsequent weeks, have revealed further information regarding possible homicide.

"Based on our current knowledge, this is the first time that this specific information has been passed to the Met.

"At this early stage in this inquiry, with much work still to do, it is not appropriate to issue appeals or reveal more information."

Margaret Thatcher blocked plans to strip a paedophile diplomat of his knighthood, according to confidential Government papers published for the first time today.

The then Prime Minister allowed Sir Peter Hayman to keep his knighthood even though she knew he was a member of the Paedophile Information Exchange (PIE)
