~| Plans For A British Republic |~

I have developed a strong republican streak recently and I believe it is high time we brought some reform to our aging political system.

What I am calling for, ladies and gentleman, is a new revolutionary order that will sweep aside the cobwebs of reaction and bring pride and prosperity to our people once more.

I am not talking of the introduction of a democracy, a word which I feel has derogatory connotations in assuming the rule of the people should automatically mean that the people are one, homogeneous body, a collective, and blotting out any delineations that mark out the presence of individuals and individual needs, identities, ideals and creeds. A democracy is akin to mob rule, akin to chaos, disorder and self-destructive self-deception. A democracy should be off the cards.

I am talking about a society that offers true freedom to its people. I am talking about a society that gives self-fulfilment, satisfaction and a sense of belonging to the many. I am talking about the re-introduction of a Protectorate to rule over our august nation.

The office of the monarchy would be abolished through an Abolition of the Monarchy Act, and be replaced by a Lord Protector, with a new bi-cameral legislature to be established consisting of the House of Commons and an elected House of Lords, to be elected every 5 years. The Lord Protector would be elected by Parliament and not through a direct election, which may lead to the election of demagogues, liars and riff-raff who are unfit to rule. This will mean the leader of the largest party will typically gain election as Lord Protector. A coronation similar to that had for monarchs will be held for the Lord Protector, complete with the giving of the Crown by the bishops (which can be seized out of their hands to represent the popular approval of the new regime, and an oath sworn on the Bible) who has a five-year term and appoints the Prime Minister, who shall reside in Downing Street, whilst the Lord Protector may reside in a chosen palace (perhaps Buckingham Palace, although it might to be bought from the Windsors, not sure, though it may be state property which can simply be seized) as his/her official residence.

The Church of England will be disestablished through an Act of Disestablishment, and become an independent body. The Lord Protector would have the power to give out knighthoods and awards just like the monarch, but an end shall be had to official birthday celebrations, which are little more than public displays of vanity at personal expense. Modest dinners may be had instead. Heads of state will be welcomed by the Lord Protector in his/her official residence. They would have all the state regalia that would usually come with the monarch, including the Crown, orb and sceptre.

The disinherited Windsors may keep all their private property and none shall be seized by the state, but everything under the name of the state is to be seized. They may continue to reside in Britain as private citizens and even run for the position of Lord Protector, but never again may they restore the dynasty, and they can only run again after four generations.

Well, what do you think?
Nah.

Fine the way it is.
No ****ing way.

I will not see Tony Blair (for example) return to England and become the next Oliver Cromwell, complete with puritanism and genocide (probably of the poor as a whole this time instead of the Irish etc.). Irritating as the royals are, keep them in place.

I'm somewhere between neutral and pro monarchy so no. I'd also relieve myself if the unions managed to get a true socialist elected.

It was just an example. Blair would fit well however well the whole Lord Protector vibe, given how deluded and messianic the man is.
Monarchists really do need to stop saying "hurr durr really want president Blair?", as if that is an argument against getting rid of the monarchy.

That makes no sense. Blair is so hated right now he wouldn't be elected to the Queen's bedchamber, let alone as head of state.

Fair point. I guess I was thinking he is so devious that he could trick the British public into electing him another time.
