TSR Shisha Soc
Hello people!
Well i thought i might as well start a Shisha Soc, for all those who do and don't smoke Shisha.
I thought you could all debate the pro's and con's of it!
But i would like it to grow big and into a powerful Soc like the penguin one!
So just come on and chat!
Peace
WaW
EDIT:
Well seeing as so many people are questioning whether it is harmful or not I thought I would post a proper post explaining all about it...... I love it so I shall try and be as non-biased as possible!
Firstly many people would like to know ……What is shisha?
Shisha is tobacco mixed with molasses (description of molasses can be found below) and fruit flavours and is smoked in a hookah. Some people think there is a difference between shisha and hookah and there is shisha is the actual tobacco smoked and hookah is the water pipe used to smoke it! Shisha tobacco is not your typical tobacco. It's nothing like the tobacco you find in cigars, cigarettes, or dip. No, smoking true shisha is an entirely different sensation. Shisha Tobacco is the best as it's been well documented in the media, the tobacco in cigarettes is anything but pure. Large amounts of nicotine and other additives make it extremely harmful. Some cigarettes claim to be additive free, but plain tobacco isn't terribly pleasant to smoke. Smoked for flavour and not for any kind of effect, it proves a relaxing and peaceful pursuit. Since shisha is tobacco, smoking it involves some of the same ill effects as other types of smoking. However none of these have been scientifically proven!
It is very light and flavourful with a wonderful fruity aroma. The most popular flavour is apple, others include strawberry, pineapple, apricot, grape, rose, mint, and even cappuccino! (There is even an exclusive cola flavour).
In the Middle East, from Turkey to India, there are shisha cafes where people gather to smoke and drink coffee or tea. Smoking shisha can last two hours or more and is a very peaceful, social occasion generally filled with good conversation with friends. A shisha smoking session can last from thirty minutes up to and hour. It was usually done back in the middle east during Ramadan. But now they are popping up across the globe!
Now you are probably wondering what in gods name are molasses (Massell)?
The massell is a kind of tobacco used in smoking the shisha (which is also known as Nargila, Argila, Boury and Gouza). It is a blend of tobacco leaves. This blend gives a special flavour and taste with the additives of molasses extracted from sugarcane and other additives. The Authorities of Measurement Standards have decided on those additives, so that it will be adequate for smoking.
The usage of massell in Egypt was introduced with the Ottoman's occupation by the beginning of the 19th century. The idea was initiated from the Ottoman's vision whilst smoking the shisha they brought in with them from Turkey. They used to smoke what was called " Tombak"; a kind of tobacco planted in Turkey and Iran and where its preparation does not include any technical process (craft) and its quality depends on the kind of tobacco used.
By that time the Egyptians were fond of imitating the Turkish for what they have seen of development in the various areas that accompanied their existence; in the fields of industry, agriculture and culture.
The problem for Egyptians was from where to bring the shisha and the tobacco?
Thus they started to think in making a replacement for it. They brought a coconut fruit and made two holes to extract the syrup inside and then they used a bamboo stick as a substitute for the rubber tube. The haggar was made of burnt clay, where you place the tobacco on. Thus the process of producing the shisha was launched successfully and the Egyptians named it Gouza as an autonomy to the name of the coconut fruit in Arabic.
The Egyptians started to think in bringing the tobacco, by that time there were many people working in selling the rolled cigarettes. It was a flourishing trade by that time. It was known that the tobacco used in the rolled cigarettes was cut in fine layers, different than what was used by the Ottomans.
During the trials for smoking the shisha, the tobacco was not stable on the haggar, thus they failed in imitating the Ottomans.
In one of the trials, one of those who loved smoking was having his dinner; bread and molasses extracted from sugarcane which was a very popular dessert in Egypt. He was trying to fix the tobacco, then an idea occurred to him to use the molasses for being sticky to give the tobacco texture; the process ended successfully. The most important thing is that it gave the smoker a distinguished flavour whilst smoking, thus the new method of smoking started which was mixing tobacco with molasses (extracted from sugarcane) thus was named massell.
Okay so now you are dying to know how it works….well….
Basically, the hookah runs in a cycle. It begins with the bowl which is located at the top of the hookah, where we put our tobacco. We place the bowl on top of the hookah base itself, and the base goes down all the way to the vase, which has our water or any other liquid substance in it.
When you suck on the hose, we are creating a different level of air pressure inside the hookah. Since the only opening of air that we have is our hose, we are removing the air from the hookah, which causes the charcoal to heat because of the air pressure change we are making inside.
Once the charcoal is hot it burns the substances, inside the tobacco (such as Glycerin).
Now the bit many want to know…Is it dangerous to health?
Some people think it is fine and has no ill effect on your health. While there are some who say it is totally bad for you and is possibly even worse than smoking cigarettes.
Sheesha is less harmful than cigarettes. Cigarettes contain a lot more tar than sheesha tobacco. One cigarette contains about 9mg of Tar in it whereas a whole box of sheesha tobacco contains 0.1mg of Tar. Tar is the thing that harms you body so in that respect it is less harmful. Shisha smoking is generally believed to be less damaging to health than cigarettes. Research has shown that since the tobacco is being heated (as opposed to burned), fewer carcinogens are produced in the smoke. The mixture of tobacco is not directly burnt, but is heated using lit coals or an electric device. These coals usually rest on a metal mesh or perforated aluminum foil which covers a clay or metal bowl containing the tobacco preparation, although traditional smokers sometimes place the coals directly upon the maassel, producing a stronger smoke.
Whereas I found this which said…..
Yes. Shisha smoking is actually as harmful and addictive as cigarette smoking. Shisha contains tobacco and the same chemicals found in cigarettes, such as nicotine and tar. Evidence also suggests that exposure to environmental and second hand tobacco smoke from the shisha pipe is associated with significant lung and other diseases.
Well I personally think it is not as bad as smoking cigarettes, but that does not mean it is not harmful. It is but it is less dangerous than smoking cigarettes. However this is MY view and I guess it is rather different to many on TSR!
Can I just stress that we do not ask or force anyone to start smoking Shisha it is your choice.
If there are any other queries please PM!Last edited by WaW™; 29-08-2006 at 15:46. -

Re: TSR Shisha SocIt mean so much more!(Original post by lapsaJ)
Calm down dear, it's only a society.
Double apple will win hands down
And you heard this from whom? Its not that bad. Its better than smoking! I mean for one it is not addicitve! From what I've heard sheesha is worth 40 - 60 cigarettes. It is VERY bad for your health, don't listen to what they say about it filtering in teh water. The tobacco used for flavoured shishas is much worse than cigarettes.Last edited by WaW™; 29-08-2006 at 00:19.
