It's selfish in the very literally sense that it is for their own benefit but you can hardly blame them as anyone suffering so badly would likely do the same

a) no-one has said that, b) when someone is feeling awful about themselves, to the point where they try to take their own life, making them feel worse for having attempted/considered it is incredibly unhelpful - far more so than saying they understand why someone might react that way, and that it's not a cowardly action.

They may have long term effects, but they are not what killed him by any stretch of the imagination - not least since he'd been sober for years - he went into rehab nearly 30 years ago and by his own admission wouldn't touch cocaine again, and had a couple of minor relapses on the alcohol and again checked back into rehab soon after.

His addiction problems didn't end 30 years ago. If you're an addict, then a relapse is a relapse.

Yes, but he ended up straight back in rehab and being treated for it. Having a relapse and being treated is different from falling off the wagon and staying that way.

Of course it's selfish, but so is everything people do. Exploiting natural resources is selfish. Seeking medical care is selfish. Merely being alive is selfish. I don't know why being selfish is inherently a bad thing.
It puts the family through a lot of pain, yes, but then that same family may not have done enough to give the person the care they needed.
