It really depends what length/thickness your hair is, layered hair can look different on different people. Most people these days have layers in their hair so its really difficult to pinpoint a specific look!

You are better off getting some magazines and looking through them, if you go to the same hairdresser all the time and your hair is not how you want it, I recommend you find a different salon/stylist, otherwise you are wasting your money!

oh and if you google jennifer aniston and look at the pictures, you'll see what layered hair is, but thats just one example. Her hair just has subtle layers, but you can get longer layers and all sorts which look very different.

Feathered is generally the term for layers at the front I think.
When I get my haircut I just ask for front layers and back layers, oh and a side fringe

Different cuts work on different people. You may as well try it. In my opinion, a hair dresser SHOULD be an artist, and you should be able to trust their judgement for what they think will look good on you, though I have got some blank looks from hair dressers for telling them this. I think most of them only expect to be given a picture or precise instructions and having to cope with not messing it up.

Hair grows back, give it a try.

My hair is feathered at the front - starts short just on my cheek bone and the back is always long - I never get layers though in case it goes wrong - I have had the same hairstyle since I was 15 which is probably why people think I'm 16

feathered is like having shorter bits of hair at the front.

Can look totally different depending on how they do the layers. I've had really short layers but still with long underneath length but now mine's just layeres a bit & still quite long all over.

Look through magazines mainly "hair ideas" etc...they should be beside all the gossip mags anyway, bring those to your hairdresser and say "I want that!" lol
