Confused about Freshers

Hi everyone.
I want to do some of the nights out and stuff for Freshers week, but won't be living in halls or even in Reading for university. I have about an hour drive to get there, and I'm just confused about how people that commute are supposed to take part in this part of Freshers..? Any advice would be nice.

Find a friend in halls early on who is on your course and crash there? Maybe get a cheap hotel in reading for a few nights?
