The Student Room Group

Omg I didn't get into halls!

So after waiting for days for some sort of email from halls (mcmillan student village) I call up today and the lady who answered the phone asked me if I had paid my deposit... I said no because I haven't even had an email telling me anything about halls despite filling in the application months ago. She then said she would have a look to see if I had secured a place and told me that I had not, and that it was all fully booked!

The annoying thing is, the university of greenwich website says the following:

The University of Greenwich guarantees all new students a place in a hall of residence, or in university-approved housing, provided that they have met all the conditions of the guarantee below.

Accommodation guarantee conditions:
You are attending the University of Greenwich for the first time (either as a first-year undergraduate or postgraduate, or as a direct entrant to another year)
Your accommodation application has been received before 30 June 2014 (although we are usually able to offer rooms to students who apply after this date)
You are enrolling on a full-time programme of study, for which you have qualified and have accepted your offer of study by 15 August 2014
You start your studies in September, and you are studying for the whole academic year
You are studying on one of the three main University of Greenwich campuses (Avery Hill, Greenwich or Medway)

Have you asked about other halls or the "approved" housing

Do you meet all of the conditions?

Or are they claiming that you didn't accept an offer in the required time period (presumably because either an email didn't arrive with you or something was lost in the post)? http://www2.gre.ac.uk/study/accommodation/campus/apply/offer

Or you could look here for rooms in existing student flatshare etc : http://student.spareroom.co.uk/

Or at general student Halls in central London : http://www.accommodationforstudents.com/studentprivatehalls/studentaccommodation_lphs_London.asp

Yes I definitely meet all the conditions, and the lady didn't actually give me a reason just told me that my name wasn't found, and that she was sorry :/
This mess is just entirely turning me off going to university lol omg

It sounds like they're claiming they didn't receive your application then.

In that case ring em up again and ask to speak to a manager.

Do you have any proof that you applied by the deadline? Confirmation email or similar?

Ask for the names of the people you speak to and their job titles. A lot of the people answering the phones this time of year are either staff doing it as a favour for another department or students temping over the summer. You need to speak to an actual member of accommodation staff, preferably someone senior enough to override the automatic rejection.
Same happened with me (I'm going to King's). I fulfilled all the criteria (applied back in January ffs), but it turns out they guarantee every student a place in halls, just not necessarily in their first year. :nothing:

They guaranteed you a place but now saying you didn't get in? You should seek advice about that in all reality because I'm pretty sure they're not allowed to do that. Aberystwyth University had to resort to bunk beds to overcome a similar problem short term.

that feeling when accepted into halls
If you met all of the conditions you should be guaranteed a place. It might be that you didn't do a 'accommodation application' on the portal.
Obviously I cannot guarantee anything to you, but if Mcmillan is full we sometimes have space at our Avery Hill accommodation (which personally I think have a better student atmosphere but just me)

I work in the enquires office, why don't you give us a call and we can see if we can sort this all out. Our number is 020 8331 9000. Good Luck

Do they not use bunk beds in America? Or is that just on the telly. :P
Lmao thanks for the replies guys, to confuse the matter I decided to pay my deposit of £400.

Anyway, the same day I called up I received 2 emails (which could possibly be replies from my email that I sent on Saturday which was just an enquiry about getting into halls)

But yeah the emails say this:

Dear Applicant

I am writing to advise you that an offer of accommodation will be sent to you tomorrow.
Please do keep a check on your emails including junk folders and if you have not heard from us by Wednesday, respond to this email.

And the other one

Hi Zak
I am sorry for the delay in sending your offer. You will hear in two days
Thank you

Does this look good or no? :/
