You then also have the added issue of people taking unprescribed medication which could well be dangerous for them.

True, hadn't thought of it that way.

isn't there a possibility of these people selling the medication on the street to those who might be long term abusers of it? like cough syrup?

oh dear, I may get warned or banned for asking good, difficult questions?
It has happened before, lets see if it does this time

NHS is free.
But suppose the government starts charging fees for going to the doctor. What would you do? How would you react? Can this possibly happen? Afterall the Deputy Prime Minister did make a u-turn on not raising tuition fees. Oh no he did not just raise it. It got tripled

The NHS is NOT!!! NOT!!! NOT!!! "free" - NOTHING in this life is "free". You pay for every single thing you get (or don't get) with the NHS (and everything else). You pay via taxes. This is one reason that things are so expensive in the Uk, compared to the US and other countries. Compare "TESCO" prices with "Price Club" or "Wal-Mart" prices for equivalent items. Compare salary levels for (for example) electrical engineers in the Uk and US (or anywhere else for that matter). Compare salaries for soliciters.. etc. Cheers.
