Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science- HELP!

Hey, I'm new to TSR, so be nice!
I'm going to college in September, and (-after researching into the course-) I've really got my heart set on doing the 'Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science' at a local college; however, the college website gives very little detail on the units covered throughout the two years, and whether or not the course is the medical or forensic course. I've messaged the college, but -from previous experience- they always take weeks to reply, and now this horrific anxiety is building up, I just need to know whether or not this course is an option!
I need to cover specific units and (obviously) achieve specific grades in those units to go to my preferred university, so, now I (finally) ask; do you get to chose which units you do, also, do you get to pick whether to go down the medical or forensic path? The course name on the website/prospectus simply says 'Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science', no mention of forensic or medical specifically, however it does say you can change specialist units for a forensics option if it suits your careers prospects.
Okay, I've finally finished this novel of a question off, can anybody help a brother out?

Please no lectures on the whole 'BTEC students shouldn't go to university because they're too stupid' thing, I've tried A-Levels, and for various reasons didn't like them. I didn't even think of doing a BTEC until I saw this course, and after achieving all A*s in my Biology, Chemistry and Physics coursework pieces, I feel confident at my next years style of work!

I Just finished my first year of doing a Level 3 BTEC Applied Science course

Different colleges pick different units to do (For example: In my college we don't have any units on forensic science - It's mostly Biochemistry and we also have 1 maths and 1 physics unit) So in my college its just called Applied science, not medical or forensic.

So it really depends on what units the college has chosen. Some colleges like West Thames show all the units they do (So you can check their website if you want to get an idea of what the course involves)

BTEC is much more is somewhat easier than A-levels however I do believe its much more stressful. Your time management has to be on-point.

This was retake year (I did AS levels but decided not to continue) so I tried very hard this year to do the best that I ca. However unfortunately I had very rubbish teachers (Some who were ridiculously lazy and obviously didn't care about their students grades). So due to this many of the work I had put so much effort in either wasn't even marked or updated onto our mark book, which resulted in my getting really rubbish grades (The sad thing is I've been trying to fix this since half-way through the year and it still hasn't been solved - But I really hope it gets sorted ASAP)

Extra precautions (In case your teachers turn out to be like mine): When you get the assignments try and aim to achieve everything in the first attempt (The assignments will start to pile up, so its easier to achieve everything first go round so you don't have to worry about it later on)

Along with this when ever you achieve a grade (E.g. In an assignment within a unit you achieved P1 and M1) make sure the teacher puts that into the mark book system. If they haven't marked a piece of your work, run after them and make sure they mark and update it to your mark book. Don't leave it to last minute and try and do everything gradually (Cause in most cases some teachers literally give up in marking the work - One of my teachers said only give in the Passes as I'm not marking the Merits and Distinction - Which was ridiculously unfair)

But other than crap teachers, if your organised and determined you'll be able to do just fine. Sorry for this rant

I had my enrolment interview yesterday, and they told me exactly what you told me! It'd literally be impossible to find a college that does all those specific units I needed, thankfully the teachers I'll have next year got 5 students achieving D*D*D* each, so I'm very optimistic of them!
I'm sorry to hear your teachers are like that, that sucks! -Could you not complain about that to your college? Not letting you get higher than a pass is ludicrous!- .

I seriously cant comprehend your teachers being like that, I know how determined I am to do well after dropping out of A-levels last year, and then to be faced with that is beyond unfair (to say the least!), I hope you can get that sorted out.

My complaint has been sent off to the Head of department so hopefully it'll get fixed ASAP

It's really worrying - The other day I went in and spoke to one of my teachers and told him that in one of my units I had completed all the Merits and Distinctions but it doesn't show any of it on the mark book...Then he goes "Oh you probably didn't achieve it" and I explained to him that I put a lot of time and effort in that work, and how I'm shocked that I didn't even achieve 1 mark. So I asked him if it's possible to just look at my assignment. After like 5 mins, he let me see it (But he was holding onto it and turning the pages) and I saw none of it had been marked. Then I pointed to a thick load of pages and said "That's all all my merits and distinctions, I've even labelled it" & He was like oh thank you for coming and telling me about that

Like what the heck? It's a teacher's responsibility to actually be bothered and check the work - It's ridiculous :/ (& what makes it worse they've sent all the marks/grades off to the exam board - Thankfully that can be fixed through when they update the marks...hopefully)

I just completed my AS levels and obtained disheartning set of grades;

E (AS PHYSICS)
E (AS CHEMISTRY)
U (AS BIOLOGY)
U (AS BUSINESS STUDIES)

After having an urgent meeting with my head of year, she suggested that i should do something elSe. like a btec.

hence, I am also considering THE BTEC IN MEDICAL SCIENCE(APPLIED SCIENCE) L3 eXTENDED DIPLOMA .
however, i keep failing GCSE eNGLISH.

I do hope I pass (God willingly).or I'll find it difficult to work with a D grade in English and a B grade in GCSE MATHS.

No don't worry - I'm sure your English and Maths will be fine and good enough for the course (I also got a Bin maths and the course was fine for me )

heyy guys I need your advise !!!!
I failed my as so im thinking of doing Betc applied science but when I searched ucas I didn't see one uni that would give a offer for this specific betc its always betc national diploma I wonder if that's the same or something very different from betc applied science

Basically the BTEC Level 3 Applied Science (Which has 18 units) is the BTEC Extended National Diploma - It's equivalent to 3 A-levels

BTW if you are thinking about doing a BTEC, bear in mind BTEC rules have changed from September 2014.

Before you were able to have second attempts to improve your work. Example: In an assignment you had to try achieve Pass 1, Merit 1 & Distinction 1 - However due to a small mistake you didn't achieve your M1 and the teacher gives you feedback on it so you can improve it.

This isn't allowed any more - So if you don'y achieve it, then you won't get it. You are only allowed to get a second attempt of your Ps.

So if this happens in a unit:

P1 - Achieved

P2 - Achieved

P3 - Achieved

P4 - Achieved

M1 - Achieved

M2 - Not achieved

M3 - Achieved

M4 - Achieved

D1 - Achieved

D2 - Not achieved

D3 - Achieved

You technically aren't able to improve on it - Dunno the rules may change or some colleges might be more flexible about it, but it seems it seems BTEC is going to become very strict course now...I personally think it's good cause it'll motivate you to achieve everything first go, but the downside is a little mistake can change your whole unit grade which sucks.

Is the course quite demanding or is it quite relaxing because I also want to do A-level Chemistry alongside it and wondered if it would be too much workload or not as I do chores around the house and dont feel like studying sometimes. but of course, once i open a book and find it really really interseting, and understand it, then i feel like learning more and more. i feel the more i learn proves the little it is of what i know and its an awesome feeling.

can you do dentistry or optmetry degree with a btec level 3 extended diploma ?

You cant do dentistry but you can do optometry depending on the units your school do and you cant do medicine
