    internet connection
is the internet connection in any accomodations wireless or do you have to bring wires?? im to lazy to buy wires over there since I have no clue where to buy them since I'm an international student. So is it smart to bring a wire just in case or do you need one at all to connect to the internet?? Also how fast is the internet connection in the university??

wireless is build in your computer (like mine ) or you buy something and stick it in a usb port on your computer. I think thats pretty much it isnt it?

If you have a laptop which is quite recent it should have it already. But you can get a USB adaptor (which works for both laptops and desktops), or buy a small card (laptop). Or you can install a Wifi card in your desktop machine (it's easy to install, and much better than USB).

To use it, it's dead simple. Your laptop will pickup the network, and you'll just need to enter your University login.

what wire do you need to connect to the phone jack from a desktop computer is it one of those rj45 things or are they already included with the room.

Wireless may or may not be accessible from your campus accommodation as the hotspots are placed around the main buildings (maths, library, etc). You will need to either bring (or buy) an ethernet patch cable - you shouldn't need a length longer than 3m, and that's probably excessive. Note: the connector is not a phone connector; it's an RJ-45 plug.

If you forget to bring one, LazerLizard sell them on campus (next to the downstairs Union entrance where all the banks are). Just be prepared to pay a little extra.

I have a wifi card but no wires. Will have to get an ethernet cable and a USB cable... at least one should work.

An Ethernet cable looks similar to a phone cable, but the ends are wider. Instead of having a phone socket in your room, you will have a network socket.

So you will plug one end of your RJ45 network cable (which you will have to buy) into your laptop or computer's network hole and the other in the wall.

No USB cables, just an RJ45 cable. Not the cable you used for dialup 2 years ago, an RJ45 network cable.

Are the ethernet cables the one with the clear heads? (I'm totally clueless about this and have no idea whether or not they're standardized or not... so forgive what may be an utterly ridiculous question)

    Re: internet connection
yup. Don't buy it from argos though. Go to any local computer store or maplin or hell, even laserlizard on campus.

£10 for a 5m patch cable is extortion. Real cost to make it is around 20p or so.

I know, I just wanted to make sure it was the correct type of cable.

    Re: internet connection
An RJ45 Ethernet Patch cable is what you want.
Note: NOT crossover cable - although these are rare in shops.

The link to argos is the right thing, but you really shouldn't be paying £10 for one. I used to have a 300m reel of wire but now it's all used around the house. I'm tempted to get another now so I can make people wires for like £1 or something

EDIT: Hmm, I was sitting on that page for a while - 2 new replies since I first pressed the reply button!

this is something that has i've been confused about for a while, if you use a crossover into a hub, does this have any disadvantages over a patch?

    Get one of these
Or better, the day you move in, go to LazarLizard next to costcutter, on campus, and get one from there.
