The Student Room Group

Did you leave your door open and play music on moving in Halls day?

I find it extremely awkward just the thought of doing that, to play music and leaving the door open! What if someone comes in? Would you just walk into someone's rooom like that?

I already moved in I'm going to my second year and I have friend and all so it's not for me, I just read something about people doing this!

I had my bedroom door and the flat door open, but I didn't play music. Then I'd say hi to everyone else who had their doors open. The people who shut themselves away didn't make any sense haha how can I say hi to you/know you're in if you're hidden away?!
I remember I just had my door closed most of the time throughout Freshers'.
I had my door open and music playing all day. And being on the ground floor everyone walked past and said hello. Also I had a sign on the door saying "Free Beer". It was a great way of meeting people and much less awkward.

:teehee: How much beer did you bring?

About 50 cans, which soon ran out. So I went to the Uni shop to get more. By about 4pm most of the floor was at least tipsy.

How did you cater to non-drinkers?

What non-drinkers? Everyone on my floor drank. I can't think of anyone in my halls that didn't drink. In fact I don't know anyone at uni that doesn't drink.

I'll be starting first year next month and I'll definitely keep my door open once I get there so I can meet people and they know I'm there  I'll probably have some music on too because I always listen to something but it wouldn't be loud and look like a one-man-party :P just in the background. As for walking into people's rooms, idk, I wouldn't mind but I would knock first so I don't scare the **** out of them and would prefer it if others did too.

I can't exactly remember, probably some EDM or acid trance. That sort of genre.
I didn't do it on the first day, but we all ended up doing it eventually when a few of us were in.
I'm 2015 entry but I'll probably do the beer thing, no way am I playing music though. Saw someone suggest that you write your name/course on the door  what a god-awful idea
I had my door open and Top Gear on the TV.

The result - 10 people sat in my room watching Top Gear.

You think giving out free beer is a good idea but playing music and putting your name on the door with your course is a bad idea?

Obviously free beer is a good idea, everyone likes beer and everyone likes free stuff. Kind of on the fence with the music really. But obviously putting your name and course on the door is a bad idea, makes you look like a 10/10 swot with 0 social skills.
I'll probably play music, Radio 1 or some bands/dance tracks I've got. Also I would give beer but I'm going to be poor even without it so not an option

btw did any of your parents or there's stay to help unpack?

..... okay xD you do know that not everyone drinks beer or drinks at all. If I saw someone offering free beer I'd be sure to look in and avoid that person because they seem to think alcohol is the center of their social life.

Why does offering free beer mean that alcohol is the centre of one's social life?

Most people like beer, it's quite a common student tradition to drink a lot. It's not unreasonable to expect that most people drink beer, and it's an easy way to socialise because it mitigates the awkwardness that is a corollary of meeting new people.

I'm sorry if the only thing that fits your anti-drinking narrative is 'Oh he must be totally dependent on alcohol', but it's just not true. I don't intend to spend a great deal of time at university drinking, but you can't deny that it is by far the best way to meet people, especially new people.

It's fine that you don't drink, but it's needless to criticise others because they do so casually. I think people would be very glad for you to avoid them if you draw such bizarre and unfair judgements on such a limited amount of information. It doesn't make you seem like a very nice person.
