How long is freshers' and when does actual study begin?

Hello.

I've heard somewhere that freshers' is two weeks whilst I always assumed it was just one. Could someone give me a run-down of when exactly freshers' starts and ends, and when lectures begin.

My course is English (Q300) by the way (although I'm not sure if that makes any difference). UCAS said the course starts on October 1, but I reckon that's incorrect considering it said September 1 on my friend's application even though the university informed him he moves in on September 25. Right now I am thoroughly baffled so if someone could provide me with some info or point me to a URL then it'd be much appreciated. Thanks.
