Change course after first year? is it possible? HELP ASAP

This is for my friend.

He's in first year and after completing first year, he didn't like it. He want to change to a health course - but in the same uni. Is it possible?
If it's doable, how can you change? what do you have to do?
What happens to loan and grants.
Yes, it's possible. My son has just switched courses within the same university. He emailed admissions about it, and was asked to fill out a form, including a personal statement. The form had to be signed off by the heads of department from his old subject and from his new subject. They checked that he had sufficient UCAS points for the new course and that he had a good attendance record from his first year. It only took a morning to sort out. The university will send a Change of Circumstances form to Student Finance, so it shouldn't affect his loans/grants.

Yes, it's often possible to do this if the new university has spaces on the course, though not every college will allow it. You will generally need to meet their standard entry requirements, in addition to having done well enough in your first year. Whether you can go into year 2 or will need to start again in year 1 will depend on the similarity of the courses, and the policy of the university/department. You would need to contact the university you are interested in to find out about their policy.

Thank you for replying. Even if the course is unrelated to his course now? He's doing business, but he wants to do nursing. Is it possible?
Nursing degrees are funded by the NHS, so the grants and loans situation will be different. Also, the entry requirements for nursing may be very different from those for business, and universities usually want to see some kind of work experience (paid or voluntary) in the health and care industry. Your friend might do better to drop out of university and get some experience if he doesn't have any. It may also be necessary to do an Access course if he doesn't have A Levels in suitable subjects. He should speak to admissions to get advice on what to do next.

Well he did health and social care so he had work experience in care home. will that help?.

What's the process of changing courses in same uni? does anyone know what happens? do you fill a form? talk to the tutor?
bump ^
Yes, his work experience will probably be helpful. He needs to talk to the Admissions tutor for nursing ASAP. He may well be too late for this year, but that will be the best person to advise him on what to do next.

Thank you. If he did it beforehand, does he have to apply for UCAS application again or fill in a transfer form at uni?
Probably just a transfer form I should think, but only the university can really tell what he needs to do.

What course did you son do and what did he change it to? did he change it after 1st yr? Thank you . Sorry for pestering you
That's ok. He did Sports Coaching in first year, and is about to change to Music Promotion. He's starting first year again, which he's quite happy about (an extra year before he has to enter the Real World!)
all changes of course depend on the new course being willing to take you. A track record of having done well in the first year helps. When looking to move into nursing there are additional complications with grants but the work experience will help. Always best to start the conversation quickly.

Thanks for your help . Does he have to write a new personal statement for the course he wants to study? or just explain to the health admission tutor why he wants to do this course?

Speak to them first, only write the personal statement if asked to do so. However a few notes would help when talking to the health admission tutor.
