Plantarflexion

According to this website at heel contact the ankle is plantarflexed at heel contact (http://www.spineplus.com.au/studynotes/genbio08.htm). The first image here (http://www.jaaos.org/content/15/2/107/F1.large.jpg) shows heel contact.

It seems to me that the ankle is dorsiflexed? Why then does the spinplus website (amonothers) claim that the ankle is plantarflexed at heel contact? thanks

Many other sources describe the ankle position at heel strike to be mild plantarflexion (nearly 10 degrees). It may be that during midswing the ankle is in dorsiflexion, but immediately after heel strike, the plantarflexors start contracting eccentrically, so that stance phase consists of plantarflexion.

It is. When you stand heel up on your toes, it is plantarflexion.
