Obviously people from different places will think of it differently, but my experiences of mary's are:

Very female orientated (as its only been a mixed college for a yr)
Bar is too small
Accomodation can sometimes be cramped, but the actual college itself is gorgeous
Just like any other college, it has a mix of people
Generally not the best sporting college
Its over the road from the science site/library (you may have some seminars there??)

I guess the college for u depends on what sort of person u r really. Sporty/flirty/religous/hard working????

Err, flirty yes :p: , hardworking - i try, i play tennis...

I very much value beauty in grounds though. That's what attracted me to St. Mary's. As amazing as Castle seems, I'd imagine the novelty of "Wow, I'm living in a castle!!!" would wear off after a while. How do you find the social life at St. Mary's? Is it a bit 'apart' from all the colleges near Castle? Any pics of the accomodation available??

Thanks for all your help guys n gals
well im starting there in october so it must be good

heard the bars a bit crappy but it has its own tennis/netball courts which is all good cos im a tennis freak.

Mary's is definately the prettyest hill college, and has a great location being closer to the science site/elvet riverside/bailey than the others. But to be honest, I don't know too much abbout it other than the fact that it's got the worst bar. The Mary's challenge is always a laugh though

:O How dare you all be dissing my wonderful Marys??? Marys is great- I may be biased, but there you go. I spose everyone gets attached to their own college and will say its the best, but you only get out from your college what you put in! Just to clear up a few points-

Yes, the bar is small. And a bit crap. But they still serve alcohol, isnt that enough? You do have to search to find it if youve never been before (often get outsiders hunting around trying to find it on a bar crawl) but you get the local Marys lot in there and soon enough it feels like your local pub. The main thing is that we need money to redo it/ build a new one and apparently plans havnt been able to go through because of some building technicalities (I think, said Caroline, last years SBS)

A good thing is its location- right near the science site for the scientists and a shorter walk from Elvet than other hill colleges. Being right near the library as well, it makes it easier to get, renew or return a book last minute (as I have in the past, as 10 to 12 before it closed). Believe me, you may need to rush there during exam term for a book thats only just been returned that you need to put the final touches to that essay (ah, memories) and then you'll be glad you didnt apply to Hild Bede...

The people are generally lovely. The exec should be good this year, though last years were really good I thought. Marys Day was poor, compared to the big blow-outs some other college have (I sulked for the entire day) but then we did win the college challenge. Ha! Plus, it isnt that far from bailey colleges, just a short walk over flashers bridge and hey presto youre at cuths where the bar is much better...

Flashers bridge....never heard it called that before lol!

And yes....come drink in Cuths....tis great:biggrin:
Have any of you done the Mary's Challenge.
Red and blue aftershock put in mouth in the bar.
Sprint to door up three(ish) flights of stairs and a corridor.
Swallow by-now-burning mouthful of fire outside the door.
It's fantastic fun. You all run it at once.

Pfft, lightweight. You're supposed to walk not run, and wait until you get to the college gates before you swallow.
Call me a lightweight and you'll be expected to back it up! :p:
Oh wait, actually I've not really drunk anythink for about 3 months. Oh well.
It's not the alcohol that hurts anyway, it's the spices in the flavouring.

I'll tell you what I think of Mary's next month!

What is/was this 'college challenge', and when did it take place?
The library oposite Marys in the main one, the law library is next to the Castle, as is the department. If your applying to do law, apply to Castle its close to everything and is the center of Durham and there is no longer any **** accommadation as the last of it was rebuilt and upgraded this year.

The novelity of 'Wow i am living in a castle' never runs out and it is an amazing place to live and socialise.

Marys isnt all bad tho, its on the Hill so your not exactly near anything but it the most attractive Hill College (Poor Poor Grey what happened there ?). Like the others have said the bar is by far the worst bar i have ever seen or entered. You should visit durham for a few days and look at all the colleges before you decide, and if you go to Marys you will have done well, just dont apply to Grey !!!!!
You wouldn't happen to be Tom "sex" Morecroft, would you?
Regardless, I want to know the source of/story behind this nickname.
As far as I know, it's because Lydia (Lydiamonds off here, oldschool stylee) thought he was sexy in like the first week of ever. Nothing particularly interesting, unless of course I'm being rather naive.
Your damn right Pony Tail Matt aka Physics Matt aka Long Haired Matt !!!!!

Used this forum all those years back when i was a wide eyed and inocent fresher to be, found it helpful and couldnt resist and check up on the old learning.net as it used to be !!!

Where you living next year ??

It's quality that one person's ancient opinion has survived as a cool nickname for so long!
