For students who are members of Sports Societies, and for new, considering students.

I've heard on one of these threads, that Sports Societies at another university don't seem to take kindly to beginners. This saddens me, and, as a new Leeds student, who hopes to join a Sports Society to get in shape, have fun, socialise and make friends and to learn some sport, I am worried that this apparently, less than welcoming attitude, will be mirrored at Leeds.

I thought that this thread (apologies if there is a duplicate but I couldn't find it), might be a way for you Leeds societies to allay my worries, and to (hopefully) reassure myself, and any other persons who have heard of this drab (rw?) omen.

The sports I'm primarily interested in are Rugby, Martial Arts, Cycling (mountain biking up in The Dales, the thing were you go down a dusty hill on a BMX/Mountain Bike, etc, i.e. all aspects), Swimming and Rock Climbing.

Obviously as I will hopefully be having to much fun and have to much work to do, I will not be able to participate in all these. I have also thought of acting, and have applied to be a member of RocSoc, the geology society. Therefore I may only be able to be able to be involved in 1,2 or 3 societies (maybe I'm being too optimistic or pessimistic). So don't worry I'm not intending to throw myself into all of them, and die of exhaustion after the first month.

EDIT : I removed my reasons because I was embarrassed that I put them there. Thanks to that unpleasant omen I am nervous about not being welcomed with open arms and when I get nervous I babble. Anyway, as above, can my fears about not being welcome be erased of current members of sports societies?

Umm... Sorry, but I don't see the need for that big long post? Of course they welcome beginners.

I think it was that welsh dude that said at another uni they didn't. But that is that one, and this is Leeds.

The clubs are very welcoming towards beginners so don't worry. You don't have to justify your reasons for wanting to join a club.

Matt, hell yeah join up. All the sports you've listed are pretty wicked.

From experience, don't worry about the competative side, they are only competative if you let them be!

Mountainbiking is great fun btw.

Seriously buddy there's no need to stress about it! Chin up!
Yeah, I would like to try it, because it does seem fun, and I always here good things about it and other bike sports. Such as going down a dusty hill, fast, on a BMX/Mountain bike.
I would like to do a bit of competition, but only after I've got some skills .
Primarily I'm interested in those stated above, but maybe someone from, say, Korfball come in and say "Yeah, we're happy for new people", especially since I doubt many people have played it before, as it's hardly a mainstream sport.
Don't judge it till you're here.
I'm not judging it, I'm just replaying what I heard in the hopes of hearing people contradict it.

This is the post from the uncut, original version, which I don't expect you to read. I record my long posts for various, as yet unknown reasons.

I would also be grateful if anyone who currently does these sports thinks I have the right mindset for sports. I think I do, namely an enthusiasm to try new things and the fact that the doctor advised I lose weight.

Obviously as I will hopefully be having to much fun and have to much work to do, I will not be able to participate in all these. So don't worry I'm not intending to throw myself into all of them, and die of exhaustion after the first month.

My reasons are as followed :
Rugby; I have watched a few games before, though never the whole game (I don't like watching sports, and prefer to participate, though I once went to a Sheffield Eagles match) and have always thought it looked interesting, if vicious. I have been told on many separate occasions by various people that I have the right build for Rugby, notably that I am of a broad build, and am not small (5'10").
Martial Arts; I have always wanted to pursue a Martial Art, and indeed did some Judo when I was ten, for all of about 5-10 lessons, until the leader dude hurt my little toe and I cried and gave up. I'm not so much of a cry baby but I have the desire to persevere and I just need the right conditions and drive.
Cycling; I always enjoyed riding my bike when I was younger, but I grew absorbed in computer games and rarely did I go outside unless forced. My cousins boyfriend has always been fond of bikes and talks about it as if it was one of the best things in the world, to participate in bike sports of any kind. I would dearly have loved to do more bike riding around my area, but I just don't trust the people. It's full of scum, and I'm not dumb enough to provoke them by riding around on a nice bike. I'm not trying to make the place sound like Britain’s Worst Neighbourhood, as it wouldn't rank, but it's still pretty bad.
Swimming; I've always enjoyed swimming, simple as. I was always just too lazy to get of my fat arse and do more of it, plus the only decent places to swim in Sheffield/Rotherham (Ponds Forge and Heringthorpe) usually require the use of a car or public transport. I would need a car to get to Heringthorpe and, although I could got to Ponds Forge, I vowed never to go swimming there again, after someone shat in the pool and all they did was scoop it out and say swim on. I don't give a damn about the disinfectants in the water, they should have drained the place and given the public their money back. I also know that swimming is supposedly very good for you, especially where stamina and fat loss are concerned.
Rock Climbing; A guy in my college goes Rock Climbing and makes it sound interesting. I have tried it once, on an adventure day in Year 6 and it was quite fun. Though at the time I didn't like the going down part of rock climbing, and especially hated the abseiling from the very top, which we didn't actually climb to, we went up there first and were supposed to abseil to the bit where we rock climbed, below us, and I just didn't trust the ropes.
