I would also like to know this.. are girls expected to wear ball gowns? Or is it a more casual thing? At my sister's uni, they didn't have proper traditional balls, more like parties where they wore stuff they'd wear on an average night out.

I've asked a few older Keele students who are in like their 3rd year, and they pretty much said it was a more casual event, pretty similar to every other night out.
