I have recently been put out of work and I'm 18, on a gap year, and going to apply for JSA. I usually put about £5/10 worth of bets on online and probably will do when I get JSA. Can they stop my payments if i do this? even if it's out of my savings (about 1k). surely they can't choose what I spend my money on, right?

absolutely not. you are free to gamble as much or as little of your JSA as you want.

Mate, it is your money once they give it to you. You can do what ever you like with it.

I used mine to party every weekend.
