If you had ever lived in a third world country you would see that the "poor" in this country are not really poor.
I have lived in Africa and believe me I know.

There are whole generations who have been allowed to have decisions for their future taken away from them - don't work - get benefits; nowhere to live - we will give you a flat; another child - here is some money. There are no consequences for any action these days.

People have had the ability to think taken away from them and as a result have become very lazy.

I look at the immigrants into this country and they work. They share cars; homes; childcare and get on with things.

I am incredibly sad about the way this country is going and I hope that someone in government - any government, will do something about it

what can you say about the current crop of individuals in government today?
Are they competent? Do they care about the citizens?
Do you trust them to act in your best interest, when they devise policies?

I can't stand any of them - they are all spineless - if you strip all the policies bare they are all the same - cross party.

I have a real problem picking who to vote for in the next election.

The trouble is they are virtually all privileged - private school and Oxbridge does not prepare you for a life making decisions for the rest of us.

What I would like to see is real people - nurses, teachers, shop workers , running the government. Unfortunately political parties pick the candidates with the sound bites.

But that doesn't take away from the fact that people should be a little bit more responsible for their own actions

The poor in the UK have until 2004 not got poorer even in real terms. It's the USA they've actually poorer.

There is pretty much although small adjustments to the welfare system do need to be made.

poverty in the united kingdom is not having internet access. not going on foreign holidays and having takeaway meals every week etc

no really that is the actual definition of poverty in the uk
Original post by katie_carslaw
In my opinion, I think the one of the reasons that the uk is getting poorer is due to inequality. The rich are getting richer and everybody else is getting poorer. The 20% of people with the highest income have 60% of the wealth where as the 20% of people with the lowest income have less than 1%. Wages aren't rising where as prices of everything else is. Even some people who have a job are living in poverty now.

whats your source that suggest the poor are getting poorer ?
Original post by katie_carslaw
Well based on the fact the wages of those on low salaries isn't increasing along with the inflation of the prices of everything else. Resulting in the poor getting poorer

wages have been increasing though http://www.theguardian.com/business/2014/apr/14/uk-workers-first-real-pay-rise-four-years
Original post by katie_carslaw
Exactly, first real pay rise in 4 years. Those 4 years have cost people, during those 4 years they got poorer. The wages won't increase again for another 4/5 years. Therefore the poor will continuously get poorer.

everybody got poorer because of a double dip reccession. that is over and now wages are increasing

People who have power and wealth want to keep it that way and preferably more. The problem can be rectified by people engaging in society, start being less selfish for once and realise that we live in a Democracy so we don't have to keep voting in the Elites that want to maintain the status quo.

Firstly, Britian is a More Economically Developed Country, meaning it has high levels of human rights, education and so on.

You have tarnished all British citizens as being lazy. DO YOU NOT CLASS YOURSELF AS A BRITISH CITIZEN?

k

It comes down to what your country/society thinks is poverty. In Britian it's not going out once a week; African countries it's not having a house.

I think that'd be the least of our problems if UKIP got any kind of power.

yes that is what i stated before.

the definition of poverty goes along the lines of being deprived of tanglible goods that are the norm of a specific society (something like that)

not going on a foreign holiday and having a flat screen tv is considered poverty in britain

what if the poorer are worse off in a socialist government due to a complex set of direct and indirect variables ?
