I alternate between mumbling and speaking too loud (but mostly mumbling). Drives my family crazy, my mum took me to speech therapy age 14 because I was too quiet. As far as I was concerned I was talking just as loud as everyone else!
Roll on 7 years and age 21 I was diagnosed with a hearing impairment, turns out that I was pitching my voice based on what I heard which was generally much quieter than what everyone else heard! Hindsight is a wonderful thing! My speech has improved now I have hearing aids though :colondollar:
I've mumbled from as far back as I can remember but whereas previously I put this down to shyness I've recently started a new job where there is a lot of ambient noise and I've noticed that I find it incredibly difficult not only to hear other people but also to tell what volume I'm speaking at. It seems obvious to me now that I've struggled with this for some time but I had never really made the connection before.

While this is probably a stupid question do you think booking a free hearing test at boots would be sufficient to pick up this problem or would you advise I visit a GP instead? I know you're not an expert but any advice you can give would be helpful
Mmyeah. Usually when I'm actually supposed to say something important to somebody, which makes it even better.

Go to boots first as they can actually do a proper hearing test. If they spot anything then they will probably recommend you go to your gp for referral to a audiologist. Ask for a copy of your audiogram and show it to your gp. At least then, whilst you are waiting to see a specialist you can start to broach the subject at work and look at how you can adapt to make things easier for you (for example- I now make a habit of speaking louder than I think I should and also make a point of being in a position to lipread. Freaks people out when I stare at them, but hey, at least I can now respond to what they say! :colondollar: ).

Bare in mind that my boots test showed hearing loss only in my left ear and subsequent tests have shown it in both ears so even if the people at boots says it looks ok or is borderline, it may be worth going to the doctor anyway. Explain the problem and how it affecting your job and they should still refer you to an audiologist.

Hope that helps!
I mumble a lot and also speak really fast sometimes.
