How does the whole Sports thing work?

How does one make it on a Varsity team?!
&
I see some teams(exp. Football) have 1's 2's 3's and 4's next to them what does this mean?!?

During Fresher's week there'll be a fayre where you can sign up to societies and clubs. Find the sports that interest you, go to their taster sessions to see if it's for you and if you like the way they do things, buy a membership and attend the stuff they run. If you're good enough you'll be put into a team for Varsity.

The numbers refer to the rank of the team. As you can imagine, sports like football and rugby are attended by many, certainly more than the 11 or 15 required that make up a team. The firsts will be the best players as decided by the club with the next best players and often the reserve for the firsts playing in the seconds and so on and so forth. Each firsts/seconds/thirds will play in their own leagues in the university leagues system so that thirds from one uni will play thirds from others etc.

'Varsity' at Kent is the annual multi-sport competition between Kent and Canterbury Christchurch. It's not necessarily the key competition for most sports teams.

If you want to play student sport at a competitive level, this is mainly done through BUCS leagues and events (http://www.bucs.org.uk/homepage.asp).

Each sports club at the University will choose one or more teams to enter into these competitions, so you first need to join the relevant sports team. (Full list at http://www.kentunion.co.uk/sports/). As the previous poster said, this is easiest to do at the Freshers' Fayre but you can at other times if you want.

There are lots of opportunities to take part in sports at a less competitive level, most clubs will accept people who are not of a high enough standard to make the team, and there are lower-level competitions such as the inter-college football league. Plus there are loads of non-competitive sports clubs - mountaineering, caving, canoeing etc.
