abbreviations in personal statement?

Was just wondering whether i could abbreviate Occupatonal Therapy to OT to save some of my word count? I'm finding it very difficult to keep to the character limit.

I heard in a workshop I went to you should never use abbreviations - they may not know what you're on about &it's not always the professors of that course reading your personal statement! Sorry!!! If it helps, I'm finding it dead difficult too!
Use the full term once "Occupational Therapy" then follow it with (OT) in brackets.

For example, I am eager to study Occupational Therapy (OT) on a formal level.

Therefore, you can refer to it as OT from there on.

Only use abbreviations if its well known generally or within the field you wanna go into.

So abbrevs like UK, EU, NHS would be fine. I suppose OT would be all cool too for you.
