Does the UK need an Obama to unite the divisins between race, class, nationality etc?

I think someone like Chukka Ummana might be a good candidate for replacing Ed 'Unelectable' Milliband.

Why not? Everyone agrees that Milliband is a liability at this point. Wouldn't it be better to replace him with someone who can actually win the election?
Why is ummana so great? Because he's black?

Oh, I think he's great. Always been v. articulate when I've seen him in discussions.

But it's a mistake to believe that Obama 'united' any divisions in the US. As far as I can tell, he actually caused a few and certainly hasn't done much to heal the problem of racism.

He's young, trendy, articulate, mixed race, many different things. A poitician who would appeal to younger voters, minorities, women etc.

I would expect all politicians to be articulate, what has him being mixed raced got to do with it...so he can appeal to minorities? For labour to do that would be silly. Someone should be leader based on merit, they should also appeal to people based on how good they are as a leader. Young people like me won't vote for labour at all after they screwed our country up.
From what understand Boris Johnson's grandfather was a muslim.

So perhaps Boris is the man for this job
Obama hasn't done any uniting of races and class. Plus we have far less of a problem with all that in the UK compared to the states

Amazing how proposing a non-white candidate based on his race is considered ok.

No political leader can, or ever has, stopped racism. You lot cried about Mandela. South Africa is just as racist as ever before, except now it is whites that are discriminated against. You lot cried about Obama. Racial divisions still exist in the US as they always have done, in fact, the divisions have hardened more than before.

Racism is part of the human instinct, thus to me it isn't even an insult. The vast majority choose to live among and marry their own; white, black or asian. Once we stop deluding ourselves that diversity is in anyway helpful we will be able to start fixing the things that Labour and the Tories have screwed up in this country. As long as we don't try and kill each other or otherwise restrict a particular group's rights, regular preference for your own is completely acceptable.
Obama has been less than inspiring for all races.
Are you kidding? The US has more racial, class and nationality divisions than we do in the UK. Did you miss what happened in Ferguson?

As for the suggestion that Ummana would unite the UK purely because he's black, it's so stupid I won't even go into it.

Its not articulate to speak down to your own Labour members during European Elections, as he did. He doesn't have people skills.

Oh and the irony of somebody who comes across more posh than David Cameron to whinge about the Tories being full of Etonians is hilarious.
I personally think Chuka Umunna would be a great candidate for PM

Lol, didn't Britain invent the class system? How can the class division be greater in America? Anyway, race was a part of Obama's campaign because he was seen as a bridge-builder, and there are racial tensions in the UK although not as big in the US admittedly.

Social mobility, while bad in the UK, is even worse in America.

That all powerful Labour Party causing the global financial melt-down...just like those socialists in the Republican Party for the US

back on topic I believe that chukka took a large monetary "gift" from a tobacco company before chairing a committee on tobacco reform- which he claims did not affect his neutrality in the case. He's practically a tory

Forget about the global financial crisis, the welfare state became too large under labour, too many immigrants arrived...putting pressure on services and leading to an even greater housing shortage. They took us too war in Iraq...list goes on

Boris is probably the best Tory at having broad appeal, which is why he wins in a very multi-ethnic London where you need to also appeal outside your social class.

The last major Tory figure that had that kind of broad appeal was John Major who is also the last leader to deliver a Conservative majority, in 1992.
