Going to university an hour away and coming home every weekend

Hi guys

The title is explains itself really...

Anyway, I am going to a university about an hour away from my house and will be coming home every weekend (due to work)

I'll be making (after paying for travel etc) about £70 so it's worth it financially, just wondering if this will have any effect on me making friends, and life in general!? I am a friendly guy anyway tbh and make friends easily, and I've been told all the 'student nights' are in the week anyway, so shouldn't miss much. And sports is Wednesdays so again, won't miss anything!!

Just wanted to see if anyone had done it? Or currently doing it! Would be nice to hear pros and cons

Thanks

Won't most of your 'friend bondin' usually occur at the weekends when there are no classes? Have you considered a transfer?

Thanks for the reply

I have tried, but the other close university which teaches the course I want to do won't accept me without doing a year in college doing an access course, and the college is full!

Which sucks.

I reckon I did more socialising during the week at uni. Especially in first and second year, weekends seemed to be more about the 'me time'.
I did this it really didn't affect my social life at all in fact so did a friend of mine. Most of your bondin is done at pre drinks or at socs or in the outside bits in clubs.

There is one consideration if you want to play competitive sport games and training is often done at the weekend I mean Skiing you can do and climbing but if you want to race or compete in bouldering competitions then they take place4 at the weekend as do some but not all trips like to the Xscape snow dome or something.

The place I work doesn't have any other venues :/
No problem with it so long as you aren't tired and make an effort during the week.

Keep your current job but look for a new one where your Uni is. Personally I think you would be at a loss if you did have to go home every weekend.
most students in my experience go out during the weekdays, ive hardly every been out on a weekend since starting uni
I went home every weekend during uni last year. Trains become a bit of a bore but it was always worth it as I got to come home and cuddle my ponies! Complete stress buster! Quite a few of my friends would do it, it isn't as unusual as you may think! Do what you want to do, not what everyone else expects of you!

Yup. This. Weekends can actually get boring. It's just football, gym and maybe a bit of private study if your course is more intensive.

I don't really know anyone who goes out on a weekend anyway, and people make the majority of friends in classes or halls so you won't be missing out!

My friend has a similar commute and she can do it.
PROS - money
CONS - travelling time, may take time away from studying

Thanks for the reply  How long away were you from university?

Yes I have 2 dogs so would be nice to see them on the weekend too

I can imagine trains get a bit of a bore :/ there's actually a bus that goes from my university town and through my home town, so that could be an option

I study in west London and live a bit north of the m25 so sometimes there are fast commuter trains which means I can do the whole journey in just over an hour. But without fast trains it's more than an hour and a half. Worst part is when the trains get delayed or something. Which always happens!

If the journey starts to wear on you then obviously only keep doing it for as long as it's worth it! Weekends tend to be really quiet at uni so having the chance to pop home is a nice change of scene
I went home pretty much every weekend when I lived at uni, for the same reason as yourself, which was to work at my part-time job. I found it a nice change of pace; as others have said, things tend to be quiet on the weekends as most society events, nights out etc. happen during the week. The only potential problem could be if you join a sports club, some teams might train on a Saturday, or have matches on Sundays, say. I usually came back on Sunday evenings and had a movie night with friends, and invariably while catching up with them I learned they had just done mundane things like laundry, shopping etc. during the two days I was away, so I don't feel you'll miss much.

I also felt like it made me more organised and focused during the week. I knew that a big chunk of the weekend would be taken up with work and then I would want to relax and hang out with family etc., so I tried to make sure I got as much as possible done between Monday-Friday, which ultimately benefited me I think.
