Does a lodger count as a sponsor?

Hi everyone,

Student Finance England question:

My father is thinking of getting a lodger - if this lodger moved into our house, would I need to change my student finance information because the household income would change? Or would the amount I receive not change?

Please help! I'm confused!

Thanks so much.
will your dad be in a relationship with them?

No, they will just be living with us - not related or anything! :-)

Ok then. They're not counted. It's only the person your dad (or you, if you're classed as an independent student) is in a relationship with.

Going to move this to Student Financial Support

The rent paid by your lodger would count as an increase to your father's income, and that's what your means-assessment is based on.

So whilst the lodger wouldn't be a "sponsor", it is possible that they could have the knock-on impact of reducing your SF. You would have to put in a "change of Circumstances" form and have your SF re-assessed.
Ok brilliant. Thanks so much for your help! You answered my question perfectly :-)
