I can't understand this science homework!

This homework is about chromatography and we have a suspect's ransom note. There a picture as well I could show you, maybe you can help me.​ This is what it said:

Use the level ladder to help you

design an investigation to see if the ink from the suspect pen is the same as was used to write the ransom note (write a method to explain how we could find out if the suspect pen was the same one used for the ransom note)

explain how you would draw conclusions from the data that you collect (explain how you are going to use the chromatogram you have produced and the chromatogram of the suspect pen to find out if it is the same pen).

so chromatography is all about separating dyes in ink, so perhaps an experiment could be related to testing both, for which colours they contain, and at what point they come out (eg yellow out at 2cm), if theyre the same maybe theyre written with the same ink, think about your variables:

dependent - how you'll measure for a result
independent - whats being changed, or in this case, what youre comparing
control- what youre keeping the same for both so you know you can expect accurate results
