You get points for doing different qualifications - A-Levels are worth certain ammounts depending on your grades, etc, and other stuff counts too - i'm pretty sure you get some points for having a Grade 8 in an instrument. They are just a universal way of measuring qualifications, in theory.

We call them the UCAS tariff.
