The Student Room Group

Too tough to teach" on channel 5 Ian Mikado School

Is anyone watching?!

EDIT: Did anyone watch it on Monday evening at 9pm?

The programme is focused on a school which is attended by teenage boys have been deemed unteachable by local schools.

The Ian Mikardo school rules are:

1 There are no rules

2 No detentions

3 No punishments

4 No rewards

5 No uniform (for staff or students)

6 No physical restraint

7 Instead, children are encouraged to empathise

8 Listen to each other

9 Be non-judgemental

10 And respect one another…

The headteacher was wonderful, exceptional emotional intelligence, firm but very understanding. In fact all the teachers despite all the challenges seemed to remain patient and focused.

What did you think when watching it? What were your thoughts and observations?

I'm generally the same but this would be very at home on Channel 4. Worth a go.

Channel 5 did make Pothole Britain to be fair which was the best documentary style show I've ever seen. I'm amazed it didn't get a bafta nomination!

Who doesn't get angry about a pothole?! The British like to queue, talk about the weather, and have & get angry about potholes

Did you carry on with it? They were pretty incredible people!
Being busy on Monday night, I recorded and had a watch last night. Expecting it to be another one the "Educating the East End" shows, I was surprised to see how good this actually was.

This program just goes to show that in school, having detentions/ rules etc. is often not a great way to go when kids are growing up! The moral behind the school is for the children to learn self discipline. If you watch Matthew, he's been kicked out of a few schools due to misbehavior; this school have given him a chance, a chance of responsibility and to determine what's right and wrong. By the end of the program, things had turned around for him and he had settled in to the school, it took some time, but now, he's learnt that some things are acceptable and others aren't. The teachers should also be credited, they never get angry, they deal with situations calmly and reason with the kids instead of shouting at them. Incredible.

Bring on part 2!

You seriously consider that has a way to nurture a child's or young person's development?

Yes I do. It'll stop those little ****s from becoming ASBO chavs.

So inflicting physical harm on a young person in an educational environment is not going to make them angry or instil fear which could potentially lead to them act out?

Think of the levels of antisocial behaviour 50 years ago... Oh yeah, practically none. Nowadays you have kids running around like they own the place, acting up with no respect for no one.

There would be far less chavs, swagger, scene kids and generally annoying kids in general.
