The Abhorsen series by Garth Nix!
I first picked up Lirael and was smitten by it!

I used to read Jacqueline Wilson books before that but I just read it for the sake of reading. Lirael however taught me how to enjoy books.
Watership down.

To this day, the ending will make me cry.

+1 for The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Loved George's Marvellous Medicine too.
Literally everything by Roald Dahl. Artemis Fowl, Peter and the Starcatchers, and Septimus Heap, off the top of my head. The Bartimaeus series I read in my teens, but it was still amazing, I think the last book is one of the few books that have ever made me cry.

I grew up reading the Harry Potter books, and they were always my favourite book to read as a child. Of the series, I'd say Goblet of fire is my favourite.
