Hi everyone (sorry just sending it out a second time just in case some did not see it and may have advice that can help me

Would really appreciate your advice. No offence but preferably someone with kids, as I have four, but on the other hand I would welcome feedback from anyone who has no children but can give me some real sound advice as a lot hangs on my decision in terms of childcare vs the quality of teaching. I am looking to study BSc social work this September at the Uni of West London which is 1 and a half hours away but I was so blown away by the whole process, the interview, the structure, the lectures' presentation that I simply loved it. University of East London is the nearest Uni to me and though it's not bad and I enjoyed my open day for offers only my heart is drawn to west London uni. The distance is crippling but the level of teaching looks solid. As I said I have four kids, youngest is 2 can go to childminders others in school. I would attend Uni of east London 2 full days 1 half day, uni of west London 2 half days 1 full day

Please help

I live in East London and have decided to go to UEL. I did my BA there and it's not so bad! The teachers for the MA Social Work (which i'm sure are the same for the BA) look amazing. I have a son and couldn't possibly drop him to nursery and then get for classes at 9 at the other universities I was accepted in to, so chose UEL.

You'll be getting a free tablet too!

Hi Naomixo I finally settled for UEL and I feel relieved now that I have made this choice. It's funny I was at college and my daughter twisted her foot and it swelled up really badly the called me and although my husband was able to leave work and pick her up from school what if couldn't? So yes, I have accepted their offer. Thank you for the feedback and taking time to respond.
what questions did they ask in interview? I have an interview on the 5th and 10th june x

Aww sorry to hear that! I still haven't had any news which is worrying me! Don't really want to ring them to rush them into an answer I don't want😣 sounds a good plan with the cheesecake though!

Hi. How did you get on with Stirling and the rest of the uni's?

Hi, I was rejected from Stirling and York which was disappointing, but got offers from Northumbria, Edinburgh and Leeds☺️
Finally made my decisions and firmed Leeds and took Northumbria as my insurance!
How did you get on, any luck from Stirling?

Well done on your offers
I got rejected from Stirling too, don't know anybody who got in. I received offers from Strathclyde and University of the West of Scotland. Firmed UWS as it is within walking distance from where I stay and loved the open day + course content!

Good luck xx

Hey looking for some insight into social work for my sister. Basically she is interested in becoming a social worker and is planning on going to an open day to learn more. She has some concerns thought that I'm hoping someone can help us with.

First what are the hours like while studying and later working as a social worker?

Her interest lies in adoption/foster because of her own personal experience. Can you specialise in this area?

She also has an Autistic son who is only 6 and she is his main carer. So she's wondering how often you're in call and how many weekend you're expected to work?

Many thanks any information will be greatly received.
I started my first year in September at mmu we are in four days a week but a couple of the days are half days, we have assignments but these are manageable, we are in mostly half 9 til 3.30 but sometimes they let us go earlier, when we have a half day we are in until about 12 so this is really good, when you are qualified these hours are similar, it's based around a 9-5 job but sometimes you may have to work later in the evening or be on call, yes you can specialise in adoption and fostering and you can choose to do just these on your placement as well if you wish, in second year you start your placement Which is three days a week and then you are in uni two days, so a bit more demanding but they're only preparing you for what your job will be like, our teaching year finishes in April, then we only have one assignment to submit and we are done for the year so I think this is really good, at mmu it is 100% coursework so no stress or pressure from exams, you simply submit one assignment per topic you do throughout the year and it all adds up to your final grade, hope this helped wish you all the luck, tell your sister to get some more experience like maybe do a few days volunteering at women's aid

Hi everyone, I am applying for 2016 entry and I have an assessment day coming up for Middlesex University next Wednesday. What should I wear (I'm a girl) and should I read books on the reading list?

Hi,

I dressed smart-casual, I wore a grey skater dress with black blazer, tights and black flats. Try not to over do it, but also don't go dressing ridiculously casual; dress how you would for the profession. I also wore minimal makeup and I wore my hair back; this is choice, but I knew I would play with my hair to help with the nerves if I wore it down and I didn't want it to affect my interview score, so just a tip if you tend to do things like that.

I didn't get given a reading list for any of my interviews; but I did flick through one book and take notes, I found it was a great way to prepare and get my head around social work. I read What is Social Work? so I recommend that.

Also, just a few tips in general. Try to prepare answers to questions before you go for your interview, common questions like "what is Social Work to you?" "Can you give an example when...?" Are more than likely to come up so if you could prepare some answers and practice you would have an advantage, unless you're good at improvising on the spot; unfortunately I am not haha!

Good luck!
