    Re: St Hughs Oxford
Right.. Im not the first Hughsie to stumble across this topic but ill put my little bit of spin on it given that I think I am the first rower to pop up! Right as has been said there are 2 'gyms' although one is strictly an erg room so isnt really a gym more of a rowers house of pain. The main gym is OK as far as college gyms go - I know of plenty worse and plenty without gyms altogether. Ill admit it isnt the prettiest or biggest place in the world (and does somewhat lack ventillation) but its certainly good enough for all the rowing teams to do their circuits in so personally unless youre ultra keen the gym at hughs is perfectly adequate!

On the issue of distance from the city... Its something we just get on with really... I hardly notice it now especially on a bike - I can be in town in literally 2-3 mins - hardly a major problem and it keeps you fit! Our boathouse is technically the closest to the city (in terms of accessibility) of all the colleges and whilst we share it with wadham and st annes we do have a comparitively modern, big and well furnished boathouse. Riding down to the boathouse can be a bit of a chore but its a decent warm up and to be honest its barely 10 minutes on a bike.

Hmm what else... I guess those of you who have posted here already know about the grounds. They are truly stunning and has to be one of the big selling points for the college. From what ive seen hardly any colleges in Ox can boast as good grounds as Hughs! Again due to the size of the college everyone can potentially live on site which helps bind the community - Im a fresher and I already have plenty of friends in the 2nd,3rd,4th years and beyond.

Fantastic societies at Hughs in both music and sport, great facilities (particularly the library beautiful place and has a great stock of books especially for you arts students out there (though I dont make much use of the libraries in general)) great college!

Oh and just lol at the person who called Toby a geek.

    Re: St Hughs Oxford
    hi!

im planning to apply for a masters in social anthropology and after a little exploration of the oxford website, found that 8 colleges offer my subject:

Harris Manchester, Hertford, Keble, Magdalen, St Hilda's, St Hugh's, St John's and St Peter's...

went through the websites of each of these colleges but it's quite hard to get a sense of the personality of a college from just that...

so i was hoping to find out a little more abt hertford and hopefully my other 7 options on this forum...what are the colleges known for? are their any stereotypes associated with each one? you know that kind of thing...

    would greatly appreciate any responses!!

    thanks in advance

Smilingmaniac, rents are pretty reasonable at Hughs, this term I paid 969 for my accomodation and for the moment at least rents are fixed across the board - ie everyone pays the same regardless of the room they get.
