Ways to improve from average grades in youth

Hi again, as I posted in another thread, I am looking for ways to get considered at a good University. My prospects for this are long term, so time is not an obstacle. I am willing to invest up to a Bachelors degree (distance learning) to get myself good and recent grades.

I was average when I was younger, but have to give myself credit for managing average whilst being hampered by a seriously dysfunctional family. I literally studied sitting between my parents empty booze bottles and welfare cheques.

anyway, thats not an excuse at good unis, so now I need a course or degree with Oxbridge level grades. What do people usually do to improve their old, insufficient exams and levels?

Would like to hear about different routes, and specifically hold them up against the possibility of seeking graduate entry (2-year BSc). I understand that this is assessed differently than general/open application, so would this maybe pose a more realistic option?
