1: How was starting Uni?, was after a year of no study suddenly hard to get back into academics ( sorry coursework has made me tired&I can't word sentences properly). - it's been weird getting used to a routine again and getting used to early mornings several days a week, so yeah it has been a bit hard.

2: Did you feel funny about your age difference? - lol not at all. I'm 2 years older than some of my friends and I really do not care.

3: Did you see meet any of your friends on their second year of Uni? - nope, I don't know anyone from my school who's at my uni.

4: In the gap year did you still keep in touch with your old friends who went to Uni.- yep! Still in touch them, it's just very hard to arrange meet-ups because we're all so busy and many live far away!

5: Do you regret it?- not for a second.

6: What did you do? Did you work, etc? - volunteered and travelled.

7: Did you Travel? If so, what was it like? Do you think Travelling was worth taking the Gap Year? - yes, I went to Vienna in December and then Ecuador in June. It was great!

8: Did you find new friends in your gap years/ found other people taking a gap year like you?- a couple. But I didn't really meet many people on my gap year.

9: How was it seeing people on Facebook talking about Uni,etc? - made me excited!

10: Did you wish you were back on your Gap Year or were you like omg so glad you're finally here at Uni?- no, it was good to take a break from education but I'm glad I'm at uni now. I've missed studying, in a weird way! And also I was a bit of a recluse on my gap year. So the socialising at uni is a great change.

11: Do you think you NEEDED your Gap Year? it made you the person you are today? and without out if you would have failed in life, do you think you matured and learnt Life Lessons you needed to learn if you didn't - definitely needed it. After A levels and a personal loss I was utterly exhausted. A gap year did me good.

12: Did you enjoy it????!!! - yes and no. I enjoyed being able to do my own thing, lie in all the time, no deadlines. But I was bored/lonely a lot.
Reply 2
I am currently taking a gap year. I have kept in touch with old friends and i have made a couple new friends at work (but i'm still quite new there)

I did not apply to uni last year because my mental health has not been great so i am trying to take my time when making important decisions. But I do sometimes wish i was in uni now.

I work behind a till at primark on weekdays. It's crazy and hectic but i love it and the people i work with are lovely. I am not going travelling because the money is needed for next year at uni (fingers crossed i get in...)

I am also learning to drive, doing a violin grade and generally fulfilling some personal goals. I go to a life drawing class on wednesdays with my friend who is also on a gap year. So tbh i am enjoying myself, keeping busy and i don't regret it.
1&2: Same as 4&5 above^
Yeah still keeping in touch with friends at uni. Some have come back home (already) for weekends and I've met them. Others I've visited.
Really enjoying my gap year so far, definitely don't regret it.

3: Are you going travel, if so what will you be doing and where?
Yeah. I'm working for 9 months, getting engineering work experience, as part of the YINI scheme and then I'll travel for a few months. Not sure where!

4: Do you think it has benifited you? (soz about spelling)
Yeah it's probably going to benefit me. Doing work experience means that when you graduate you're more likely to get a job. Although I could've done a year in industry as part of my degree I wanted to do it to see what engineering was like and whether I'd enjoy studying it. I also didn't really feel ready to rush to university and wanted to save up some cash so that I could go travelling!

5: Is it boring already?
Nope. Although this depends. If you're proactive and find things to do then you'll really enjoy your gap year. If you're at home everyday not doing much I can imagine it'd become fairly depressing.

6: Are you keeping in touch with your Mates who have started Uni now or have you made/are making new friends?
Both really. Keep in touch with old friends and also have made quite a few friends at work.
7&8: Same as 8&9 above?
Yeah, at the company I work at there are two other gap year YINIs. There's also a lot of graduates so I don't really feel alone. It helps that I've still got a few friends living in London too.
Seeing people post stuff about uni actually makes me more excited to be going
9: Are you glad you have no study/exam stress or are picking up new qualifications (such as AS/A2 FM) ?
Yeah it does feel good coming back from work and not having to do any studying. Although I will be resitting at least one of my A2 exams so in a couple of months I'll start revision for that! I'm also doing a maths course at work for a couple of hours a week so that I don't forget how to do maths over my gap year.
10: Do you think you will feel funny about your age next year?
Definitely not, my friends have said loads of people there have taken gap years. Also I don't think other people will be able to tell really.
11: Are you starting a Third Year of College? If so, why?
No
12: What are you doing so far/ planning to do? ( same as six above really but in different tense?? idk ???
Working for 9 months then travel.
13: Same as 11 above but I guess so far?
Yeah it's definitely useful. I'm realising more and more what I want to do with my life.
14: Same as 12 above but so far again?..
Yeah, enjoying so far!
Doing a gap year at the moment:

1&2) I do still keep in touch with close friends who are currently in university and I've got plans to travel to visit them at some point when they're available. Conveniently my closest friends are now in universities in close proximity so we can get a reunion thing going.

In terms of regret, I regret not working hard enough in my AS year to get the grades I needed to apply to the universities I wanted during y13, and basically I had no choice but to take a year out to apply to my initial 'dream' university with achieved grades.

3) I'm planning on travelling for a short time to either USA/Australia in 2015, but need to save my pennies! This will probably just be a sightseeing trip if it's USA, I might go backpacking in Australia.

4) Well it has given me time to re-evaluate my life and think/plan ahead my future. I have no clear idea of where I want to be in 10 years time and I have been constantly researching my university/career options. It's certainly helped me think more holistically when it comes to life approach

5) Yes. Very boring when you're at home when most of your friends are away. Netflix has been my best friend at the moment.

6) Yes, still predominantly in touch with my friends at uni over facebook and skype, especially the ones I was closest to in school. I've joined the gym and some other clubs and acquainting myself with new people all the time.

7&8) Not travelled yet, but plan to later. Nope not made any proper new friends yet and I'm not close or friends with any of the other people I know currently taking a year out.

9) I'm actually resitting a couple of modules this year, but it's great without the stress of attending sixth form.

10) Not too much, but I do feel like I've 'lost' a year of my life in this gap year because I didn't work hard enough before so I'm forced to be in this predicament, it wasn't by choice. Not going to lie, I'm not looking forward to being older on average compared to the rest of my class.

11) This is a third year of college for me, technically. Difference is that I am self-studying with a tutor this year for a few modules, but apart from that I'm not in any full or part-time education.

12) I am currently preparing my UCAS application and personal statement sandwiched between my current job at Marks and Spencer to have some more dollah. I've got a pipe dream whereI someday wish to work in TV writing, so I write quite a lot in my free time as a hobby. I also play a lot of tennis and go to the gym. I also play the guitar and piano whenever I can.

13) This is something that I don't think I personally needed and was something I wish I could have avoided honestly. However I do think it has changed my outlook on life and has shaped/changed my overall personality from being a slacker to a more hard-working person. This is in part fuelled by the fact most of my friends are at uni. I am a lot more informed about things as well now since I have more time on my hands.

14) No, but if my future plans work out then perhaps it'll improve!

I hope this helps!

1) No I had no trouble getting back into academics.

2) No, because I was only a year old, no one cared and there were students older than me. No one cared about their ages either.

3) Yes

4) Yes

5) Hell no.

6) Worked in retail to save up some money then spent three months in Africa working on nature reserves.

7) Definitely worth the gap year and one of the best memories I have.

8) Yes there were other people taking gap years, others that just wanted an extended trip somewhere, all sorts.

9) Didn't care, exams are exams, coursework are coursework. It doesn't matter if your at uni or not, unless someone is specifically talking about their university you're going to know what they're talking about.

10) At times I want to go back. I do intend to do more travelling as there is other stuff I want to see but beyond that, I'm not so hung up on the past that I'm going to ignore what I'm doing right now.

11) I think I matured, I think it did me a lot of good. I don't know if I needed it but I'm better for it.

12) Yes I did.

I'm also doing a GY at the moment. I haven't read what everyone else has said, so I won't bother going through question by question to avoid repeating everyone else said.

If you are considering a GY, make sure you have planned it well in advance. There are loads of positives to taking one, namely getting a decent amount of money, travelling (and spending that money!), getting some work experience, etc, but if you don't have a plan from the start it will become pretty dull.

I had a ten-month internship lined up at a Bank, which fell through due to lack in funding on their part. By this point, I hadn't applied to University, and so had little choice but to take a GY anyway. This would be fine, I thought.., as I could get some good work experience and there were about 6 of us planning to go travelling later in the year, and they lived close so I could regularly see them. On results day, however, these guys made the decision to go through Clearing and go to University this year. I hadn't really got a back-up plan. All my friends have gone to Uni now, and I'm not going to lie to you it's pretty lonely. I live quite close to Manchester, and can visit friends there to go out but I miss those day-time interactions at College which I didn't appreciate at the time, and it can be quite boring. I've had some really good work experience, and am starting a job soon, which takes your mind off it as there are obviously people to speak to there. After May, I plan on still going travelling, with the same people, but it wasn't the original plan.

In short, make sure you have two plans in case the first falls through. As long as you keep yourself busy it will fly past, but if you're just sat at home alone, it will be quite a lonely year..

Perhaps the biggest positive though is the fact that you will have friends at all the Universities you want to go to, and so can ask first hand questions! The worst part is freshers week and seeing all the photos on Twitter/Facebook/SnapChat..

QUESTIONS:

FOR ANYONE WHO HAS DONE A GAP YEAR:

1: How was starting Uni?, was after a year of no study suddenly hard to get back into academics ( sorry coursework has made me tired&I can't word sentences properly).
It was a little difficult going back to life where you have less free time, but as long as you are motivated to do your degree that shouldn't really stop you from doing well. For me the first couple of weeks I constantly had to remind myself I had work/homework to do.

2: Did you feel funny about your age difference?
What age difference? At uni, it doesn't really matter. In my course and halls, I studied and lived with people who were couple of years older than me, those who were the same age and those who were only a year younger than me. Nobody really cares.

3: Did you see meet any of your friends on their second year of Uni?
Nope. Many universities in the UK, doubt I'd see my classmates doing the same course in my university. Even if that does happen, meh!

4: In the gap year did you still keep in touch with your old friends who went to Uni.
Yes. Granted they were busier than I was initially, until I found a job, but still, even if I didn't see them much there was always Skype and meetups on holidays.

5: Do you regret it?
Nope. Doesn't mean you wont though. Make sure you do the sensible thing for you.

6: What did you do? Did you work, etc?
First 3 months I travelled. I didn't travel just for fun though, I volunteered at a hospital in the country I went to. Once I was back, I applied for jobs and got a job couple of weeks later. Worked until the week of my freshers.

7: Did you Travel? If so, what was it like? Do you think Travelling was worth taking the Gap Year?
Look at Q6.

8: Did you find new friends in your gap years/ found other people taking a gap year like you?
Not really, I did the travelling thing on my own, not with other gap year people.

9: How was it seeing people on Facebook talking about Uni,etc?
One day that was going to be me. And then it was.

10: Did you wish you were back on your Gap Year or were you like omg so glad you're finally here at Uni?
I was glad to financially have started my studies.

11: Do you think you NEEDED your Gap Year? it made you the person you are today? and without out if you would have failed in life, do you think you matured and learnt Life Lessons you needed to learn if you didn't ?
Yes! I would have not failed in life without it.

12: Did you enjoy it????!!!!
Good and bad, overall yes. Good - experience, money. Bad - I didn't really want to be taking a gap year, but when I got in to a better uni that I would've the year before it was sort of worth it.

FOR ANYONE WHO'S DOING A GAP YEAR RN

1&2: I still keep in touch with some of them. I know a lot of people whom I'd consider as acquaintances but the number I speak to now is very low. I don't really keep in touch with the ones who are on a gap year to be honest.

3: Are you going travel, if so what will you be doing and where? No.

4: Do you think it has benifited you? (soz about spelling)

Yes it will be beneficial.

5: Is it boring already?

At the moment, yes, but will be okay from Jan 2015 and also when I get a job.

6: Are you keeping in touch with your Mates who have started Uni now or have you made/are making new friends? Both. Sort of.

7&8: I know others who are gapping, quite a surprising number from my school actually.
I don't really use Facebook but seeing 200s stories on Snapchat is annoying as it's always clubbing/drinking and I couldn't care less as I'm interested in neither. Gives you an idea of what uni is like, I suppose.

9: Are you glad you have no study/exam stress or are picking up new qualifications (such as AS/A2 FM) ?

Picking up new qualifications.

10: Do you think you will feel funny about your age next year?

Nope.

11: Are you starting a Third Year of College? If so, why?

Nope.

12: What are you doing so far/ planning to do? ( same as six above really but in different tense?? idk ???

Get a job. Volunteer. Write the exam for new AS.

13: Same as 11 above but I guess so far?

Yep, definitely need this.

14: Same as 12 above but so far again?..

It's amusing seeing people in school/uni moaning about homework/lectures.

FOR ANYONE WHO'S DOING A GAP YEAR RN:

QUESTIONS:

1&2: Same as 4&5 above^
Yep, still keeping in touch with old friends. We said before they left that we all hadn't been friends for 7 years for nothing! So we agreed to keep contact.

No, don't regret it. I took a gap year because this time last year I had no idea what I wanted to do, and I didn't just wanna apply for a course I didn't care about (It's a lot of money to spend on something I don't wanna do in future!). Now I know what I wanna do, and I'm working to get extra money for uni. I'm also doing more extracurricular stuff that I had no time for in school, learning to drive, and I'm retaking some A2 modules to get into the uni I want as my firm. So I'm happy I've taken a gap year or I wouldn't have time for these things!

3: Are you going travel, if so what will you be doing and where?

Nope, would rather just save up my money. Most of the money's going on resits/driving lessons/extracurriculars anyway, so I wouldn't have enough for travel. Travelling abroad has never been my thing so I'm fine with not going anywhere.

4: Do you think it has benifited you? (soz about spelling)

So far, yep. I still have to pay for my own food in my household and other things, so I'm certainly being forced to grow up.

5: Is it boring already?

Not yet, maybe around January time the boredom will kick in.

6: Are you keeping in touch with your Mates who have started Uni now or have you made/are making new friends?

Both. Talk more to my friends who are at uni though, the people I've met so far on my gap year aren't really "friends", they're just colleagues I chat with or acquaintances.

7&8: Same as 8&9 above?

Surprisingly a lot of people in my year at school didn't get into uni this year (or they rejected it as they didn't wanna go to their insurance) so a lot of my good friends are taking unplanned gap years. So I'm talking to them a lot. As for new friends taking gap years, I've only met a couple people, but they're not friends, just people I've chatted with at work or work experience.

I've been avoiding Facebook for the past month for this very reason! Haha!!

9: Are you glad you have no study/exam stress or are picking up new qualifications (such as AS/A2 FM) ?

Well I'm happy to be retaking some A2 modules, glad I have the chance to improve my grades because I know I can do better. I did alright the first time round, but I want certain grades for my top uni choice and also so I don't regret it in future. I'm glad I have more time to study for them too, so hopefully it won't get too stressful.

10: Do you think you will feel funny about your age next year?

Nope, don't care. This is life, you'll meet people of all ages all the time.

11: Are you starting a Third Year of College? If so, why?

Well technically if I'm resitting some A2s in my gap year at school, does this count? Although I'm teaching myself independently and only coming in for exams. I explained why in one of the answers above

12: What are you doing so far/ planning to do? ( same as six above really but in different tense?? idk ???

I explained in one of my answers above

13: Same as 11 above but I guess so far?
Yep, I explained in one of my answers above too  I still feel very independent as I'm paying towards household stuff and not asking for my mum's assistance because I need to be used to this independence for uni. I've also had the chance to do stuff I've never thought about doing so I'm happy, so far... (apart from my relationship with my mum atm but that's a whole other story, ha!)

14: Same as 12 above but so far again?..

S'alright so far, I guess

This was a good thread idea, OP! Nice to see how everyone's doing on their gap years  Are you thinking of taking a gap year, OP?

In the gap year did you still keep in touch with your old friends who went to uni?

I have so far, though it’s still early days. It helps that I live in London and the vast majority of my friends have stayed in London for uni. Quite a few of them are commuting from home, even.

Do you regret it?

No. Even though this past weekend I saw what could have been by visiting a friend at uni, I’m still glad I’m taking a year out.

Are you going travel, if so what will you be doing and where?

No firm plans, as I’m otherwise occupied until late July 2015. I may go to Germany or the Netherlands at some point between then and October 2015 if I can find the cash

Do you think it has benefited you?

Absolutely, though my answer probably won’t mean much to anyone other than myself because it depends so much on what you do. Taking a gap year in itself isn’t what’s benefited me the most, it’s what I’m doing.

Is it boring already?

Nope, I’m kept too busy to be bored!

Are you keeping in touch with your Mates who have started Uni now or have you made/are making new friends?

See above for keeping in touch with school friends, but the primary people in my life right now are absolutely those who I’ve met through my volunteer programme.

Did you find new friends in your gap years/ found other people taking a gap year like you?

Yeah, but that’s because I’m part of a structured volunteering programme alongside 100 others.

How was it seeing people on Facebook talking about Uni,etc?

Does make you feel a little like everyone’s moving on in life, but I’m moving on too so it doesn’t have much of an impact.

Are you glad you have no study/exam stress or are picking up new qualifications (such as AS/A2 FM) ?

Very glad, it makes for a nice break from that sort of stress but equally I’m coming to terms with more work-based stress - hopefully a good preparation for life after uni & a help in being grateful for not waking up at 5am come next year. :P

Do you think you will feel funny about your age next year?

No way, the age difference between 18 and 22 is practically imperceptible let alone the one between 18 and 19. No one should be put off of taking a gap year by this.

Are you starting a Third Year of College? If so, why?

Not applicable

What are you doing so far/ planning to do?

I volunteer full time in a London primary school, support kids in class and lead activities in the playground/before school/after school. This is for the full academic year.

Do you think you NEEDED your Gap Year? it made you the person you are today? and without out if you would have failed in life, do you think you matured and learnt Life Lessons you needed to learn if you didn't ?

I think I would’ve been just fine going to uni straight away, to be honest, but I’ll bring more to my studies having had this experience.

Did you enjoy it????!!!!

Touch wood, but yes!

I got ABBa the first time round (took up another AS in Year 13) but for my course at the uni I want as my firm, I need AAA, so I'm resitting the Bs. I'm resitting 5 modules: 1 AS and 4 A2s  You?

Not really, I didn't take my (I)GCSEs at 16 (problems) so i'll be going to Uni at 19 anyway (Hopefully)

If you think this is bad rn i'm taking my gcses a 'year later'

I'm resitting 10 modules, 2 AS and 8 A2s :frown: I had some mitigating circumstances causing poor performance at A2 though. What course are you applying to? I'm not applying to any courses needing more than AAB this time around haha.

You should mention your circumstances in your PS and if you really had circumstances you shouldn't feel that bad  x
