Reading for a physical geography degr

I am I first year student reading physical geography. So far I've really enjoyed living as a student and freshers was great! However now that it's time to attend lectures and turn my head towards the academic side of student life I've hit a bit of a wall. In the lectures I'm a little confused on what exactly I should be taking in and what I should be going away and reading up on. We have a reading list and been set an essay assignment but it just feels like we've been left in the deep end. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated
