Pornography: An Art Form?

Poll

Is Pornography An Art Form?

On another thread I - no pun intended - came across the suggestion from two separate posters that the recognition of porn as an 'art' should not be dismissed lightly.

It goes without saying that this raises a cluster**** of further questions about what exactly 'art' is, whether some types and works of art can be better than others and, if so, in what way etc. etc. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

Art:
"the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power."
"
the various branches of creative activity, such as painting, music, literature, and dance."

To me, it fits that description. Therefore it's art
Well 'art' seems to be a very broad term, I've heard it defined as 'any item performance or idea that serves no purpose other than to make you think'. Though I'm not sure I necessarily agree with it.

I refuse. :fuhrer:
If porn is art then so are the doodles I make in my notebook when I'm bored in class. Where do I get my paycheck?

If the doodles in your notebook appeal to men (and woman?) worldwide then I'm sure you can sell them to an art gallery somewhere

Does it fit that description? Most porn doesn't have a lot of creative skill involved, or imagination, and it is made to arouse which isn't the same as to appreciate beauty. It certainly isn't made to be appreciated for its emotional power.

There needs to be a cut off point for something that had required some degree of creative skill in labeling it art, or as another poster said we could slap it undeservedly on anything. I don't think the level of creative skill involved in most porn should be said to meet this cutoff.

Porn had a clear purpose other than to make you think, if that is a purpose at all - to arouse.

I'm not a fan of art myself but last time I went to Tate Modern it was full of random scribbles labeling themselves as 'abstract art', all the way to the realistic self portraits, and so clearly the term has a very broad definition. While yes I agree it doesn't have a lot of creative skill involved, none the less the people within the films are acting which is a form or art; be that to arouse, appreciate beauty or for emotional power. "the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination" Porn is not a documentary and is 'made up', to do this requires some form of creative skill and imagination whatever the intended outcome of it is. However of course the sheer variety means that there will be some types you could consider art, and some times not. I think it's more what you decide is the majority which is something people will have very varied opinions on

Art is a useless term if you use it so lightly. I think sex can be an art if it is romantic, but for me for something to constitute an art it has to be a higher pleasure involving cognitive content. For example putting some chips in a microwave is not an art, but cooking complex Italian food might constitute an art.
