I really like it there, so excited to start! If you have any questions about the admissions process, feel free to PM me
Hey guys

I wanted to ask what happens when you're a junior doctor, like what are the steps?
So you'll be a junior doctor for the first two years?
And then you'll decide whether you want to specialise or become a GP?
And then you'll have to take anther exam?

Thank you!!

Yeah I hope so! I was aiming for A*AA but AQA are being absolute *BEEP* with the biology exams! Hopefully I can get an A* for chem but you never know.
How are you finding a levels?

Im finding my A-levels good!
I do WJEC biology and I have to admit the exam board do make quite fair exams, although there is a lot of application questions they always make it not to difficult to pick up marks.
OCR chem is killing me, i find it the hardest out of the three!
I do AQA geography and really do enjoy it!

Hopefully i can get A*A*A - with the A in chem but Im not to sure!!
I would be happy with AAA - as long as I meet my offer and get into med school I dont care!

AQA are bloody horrible :frown:
I'm doing ocr Chem too! I find it okay tbh I'm more worried about biology :L
& you can totally get those grades! It'll definitely set you apart from everyone else! Can I ask where your offers are from?

I applied to medicine at Lancaster, Liverpool, Sheffield and Cardiff and got 3 pre-interview rejections from the first three, and then I got an OFFER from Cardiff!! Im so happy as cardiff was 100% my first choice school, im so lucky to have an offer let alone one from my first choice!!

I just find OCR chem very annoying, the exams can be extremely picky and very applied which often causes me to get very muddled up.

Aww that's so good! Congrats
& I feel like that with AQA! They're so picky with their words & there's too much application! :unimpressed:

Thank you so much!!

Dont get me wrong, people will make out WJEC is so easy, when it really is not unless you know the spec inside out!!
They are so specific and require you to spell the words correctly to get the marks, and often focus on tiny bits of the spec with a lot of application questions... hence why the grade boundaries are often very low (like 70% for an A) - it is also very synoptic.

good luck in your exams!!

I was, but after seeing all these stats. for GCSE I got 5A* 4A and 1E(Darn you computing) but luckily its the only exam im doing on that exam board, so I can burn the certificate.

im doing maths, further maths, biology and chemistry

OMG, you are doing exactly the same As level as me. Don't worry your GCSE's grade are far better mine. How did you find As exams?

Just a word of warning, most medical schools do not accept maths and further maths as two separate qualifications, so when you are applying make sure you are aware which ones do and which ones dont...

I assume your keeping on with bio and chem anyway so it shouldnt be a huge deal... but its just worth thinking about as you may be doing 4 alevels next year and medical schools will only count 3 out of them.

Hi, firstly congratulations in getting into Leicester! Well done
Was just wondering what the place was like? The course details are easily found online but the town is harder to find out about... is it very big, compact, nice looking, cheap, good night life etc?
Thank you and well done again!

Thanks

Yh i have a 6 months placement at my local hospital helping with the older people recover, i also do volunteering at cancer research(shop) - i've also volunteered at my local cricket club coaching cricket for 2 years.

That's great! I think it's absolutely fine as long as you can describe how enriching it was for you . Wish you good luck with your application!

That happened to me this year :frown: I didn't get into uni this year...so I've been working really hard for my A levels, I applied for a full time job as a healthcare assistant (start in July) and I've applied for 2 different volunteering schemes! And then I'll reapply this year  If you don't get in this year it's not the end of the world  you just have to come to terms with it and make your year out positive, and show the universities that you're dedicated!

I'm planning to do chemical engineering

But I'm still thinking whether to do medicine or not because I'm really worried about the future and how to balance family and working life :frown:
Even though I genuinely want to do medicine.

Don't worry, there's still time to decide
Maybe talk to doctors or med students if you can and see what they say about balancing both family life and work?

Thank you

Yeah, when I went to do my work experience at guys hospital, the doctors told me how it's really hard to balance life out. they don't even have lunch!!
Although they were specialists

I'm going to do a bit more research and hopefully I'll make my decision by the end of June

Any advice from anyone would be extremely helpful

That's true, it's a tough job. Be prepared to burn weekends to public holidays working as a doctor. Personally, I believe that if you really value family time>work ,expect your work in a public hospital(nurse/doctors) to be draining. This is especially so for houseman and junior doctors ,24h shifts and little time with your family/friends.

The no lunch part is a little far-fetched, I am sure you can work that out with the hospital to have proper mealtimes, unless you are a surgeon:smile:(houseman to consultants)

I am not a doctor/med student yet, but aspiring to be one via the GEM pathway in future. What drives me to this career is the warm community in the hospitals, it's similar to a large extended family of patients to nurses and allied healthcare professionals. Sometimes, you will face cold patients, but isn't that part of life? The power to heal and to care for others makes being a doctor rather satisfying and also stressful. With great power, comes great responsibility. Are you ready for it?

At certain points of being a doctor, you may want to serve in the private sector(clinic Gps to private specialist) and lead a comfortable life Or you can further push the hurdle to do humanitarian work such as with Doctors without Borders to medical missionary works?

I am closer towards the latter and I want to be a doctor so that I can serve where medical need is the greatest.
