Hey all
I'm a EU applicant applying for English lit. and Sussex sent me an e-mail asking me to tell them more about the literature classes i did in high school, which texts we covered etc and they said they will take it into consideration.
I'm quite nervous, has this happened to anyone else too?

I haven't heard anything yet, but I just wanted to say I completely understand your nervousness. You're not alone on that! I'm really on edge at the minute.

I wish you all the luck in the world

No problem. I'm glad I could help! I think most of us who are still waiting for a decision are probably feeling very nervous right about now. Try and remain positive.

I've applied for BA Philosophy. I'm coming through a non-standard entry route and there's no guarantee whether they will or won't accept me.

It will sound weird but i had read the first post of yours before but didn't realise you're the same person who replied to my post
Your story is inspirational!! I got touched reading it. I'm happy you are determined and confident and are taking chances and learn new things! Congratulations on your grades wow! I really really hope you get into, you deserve it! Philosophy is amazing btw :h:

No problem! It's always a great feeling when you can encourage others, don't you think? I would say that if they are asking you questions about what you have studied, that is likely a good sign. I doubt they would be asking if they weren't considering offering you a place.

Haha, that's ok! That post was my first ever post on this site. I feel it shows that a lack of GCSEs and A-levels doesn't necessarily mean a lack of ability. I got 2 D's, 2 E's, 1 F and 4 U's in my GCSEs! I was so shocked when I got a distinction in the first module with the OU, and I'm so thankful that I've had this second chance and getting an education. I guess I must have done something right, they don't give out distinctions for nothing! Now I'm just playing the waiting game, but I swear I'm going stir crazy in the process!

Of course! And learning each others' stories can help us believe in ourselves more and take challenges and try to do things instead of thinking '' I'm never gonna do this or that '' because you CAN do it with lots of commitment and passion
Thank you for saying this! I had applied last year too but they hadn't asked anything that's why i got a bit worried.

It certainly doesn't! You are an example of that, look at what you have achieved on your Humanities course so far! I think if you are really interested in something, studying for it and learning things about it feels magnificent  I identify with what you're saying, sometimes it's just that you get used to think that you can't do something and when you achieve it feels like '' Wow, was it me that did this? ''
I think they will take into account your Humanities course so chances are with you :yep:

Absolutely! If there's one thing I've learned since those days at school, it's that maintaining a positive, 'can-do' attitude really helps. So believe in yourself, you can succeed! What happened when you applied last year?

Haha, thanks! I'm most of the way through my second module now, with the average grade for assignments at around 80%. If I pass this then I should have 120 credits at level one which will give me a certificate of higher education so I really hope this will be taken into account. Nothing is certain at this stage though, so I need to try and maintain that positive, 'can-do' attitude I just mentioned. It's a lot easier said than done sometimes!

Thank you for your encouragement! I kinda needed to hear this today

Sussex was my insurance choice and they accepted me but due to some personal problems i couldn't go unfortunately and i'm now on a gap year. Wish i was already there though!

This is amazing!! If you don't mind me asking, what are you learning in this module?
Best of luck with your assignment!! I'm sending all my virtual support and positive energy!!

You're welcome, i'm very happy if i could help a bit  Same goes for you too, thank you :h:

I understand. So I'm guessing they offered you a place last year? In which case I would suggest they are very likely going to offer you a place again this year. We all have personal problems which can get in the way of what we want to do sometimes, I hope everything is sorted now!

Thanks! Well being in the Humanities I've covered a wide range of subjects. From philosophy to English literature. From religious studies to history. There's a been a lot of ground to cover. As I'm now near the end of the module, the theme for the last part is 'Contexts'. I've just been studying class conflict in 19th century England. Before that I've had assignments on the story of 'material objects', Buddhism, the Protestant Reformation and iconoclasm, close analysis of texts and just recently a group wiki where we all had to work together online to write a piece about class conflict.

In the last module we covered Classical Studies in more detail as well as philosophy and art history, with assignments on subjects as diverse as the portrayal of Cleopatra in film, Plato, the use of images as propaganda in Stalin's Russia, the theme of 'tradition and dissent' in Gothic architecture, the art of Benin and racial stereotypes in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the history of medicine - Greek medical texts in the Islamic world. As you can see, it's been very wide ranging and we've covered some very heavy topics!

You're welcome, i'm very happy if i could help a bit  Same goes for you too, thank you :h:

Having someone to talk to has certainly helped, so thanks again. I'm glad I could help you too

Yes, you're right but i had to decline. Thank you, what i've learnt is that we shouldn't give up on our dreams and even if we fall, we have to try and try again.

Oh my god!!! :teeth: This is more brilliant than i had imagined, you've covered so much! It's great because they're all diverse but because they're all humanities they are related in a way. They all sound very engaging, which one(s) have you enjoyed the most?

What do you mean by material objects? Is it about material culture?
I really like the assignments in your Classical Studies!

Awesome. In which case, I'll keep all my fingers crossed that you get another offer but I honestly don't think you will have a problem

Yes, there's an awful lot that we've covered! With the OU, each module is divided into four separate but linked textbooks on different themes which are part of one overarching theme. So for example the first module was called 'The Arts Past and Present' which was the overarching theme. The current module is 'Voices, Texts and Material Culture' so yes I did mean material culture when I said that. The reason I would like to study philosophy at Sussex is that I would like a more specialist grounding in one subject, rather than a more general grounding in the humanities. I certainly have no complaints about the OU, they are brilliant and have given me this second chance I wouldn't have otherwise had.

I think my favourite subjects have been on religious studies and philosophy. I was particularly fascinated in the Greek Medical Texts in the Islamic world section, as well as Buddhism, the Protestant Reformation and of course Plato. We've actually covered more topics than this, I only mentioned the topics we were assessed on. Now I just have to hope that it's enough to get into a 'brick uni'!

Hopefully see you there in September!

I see, i'm sure all you have covered so far will help you a lot with Philosophy and you'll have a better grasp of the subject because you learn things that can be linked with the subject. I do believe they're more than enough, i don't know much about what students do in their A Levels but the level you're studying is definitely higher and more in-depth
If you'd like, post here once you have a response  See you too!!

Thanks! It's certainly the most challenging thing I've done but it's been an enjoyable experience. I have an exam in June, 3 hours to answer 3 questions. I'm nervous about that too!
I will post it in here when I've got an answer, I'd be interested to hear your response too

Best of luck with your test!! Wow, i guess you have to expand and analyse your answers a lot that's why the test lasts so long?
Sure, i'll write on here when i get an answer, i'll do my best to be as calm as possible
Hey! My name's Tash, I'm from West London and I just firmed sussex for zoology at BBB, I just filled in my accommodation form but I'm having second thoughts...

One half of me wants to just say '**** it' and deal with east slope and be able to afford to go out/eat proper food etc, but the other half of me is really anxious about dirty/messy kitchens and bathrooms and not being able to shower when I want etc etc

I know it sounds silly, but I just don't know what to do :frown: Can anyone give me any advice?

Personally I think that you will only have to deal with a messy hall if you live with messy people - which can happen in any halls, not just East slope!! The bathroom thing is something that concerned me slightly, but from what I've heard, sharing a bathroom and shower isn't toooooo bad, and I would rather save my money and be able to eat rather than spend an extra £20 a week to have a nicer shower. But at the end of the day it's you and your money so you have to do what is absolute best for you and follow your heart ahah

I'm a little late to this but I'm from Essex, I'm applying to do Criminology, I did my a-levels last year so I already have grades but I don't really want to mention them as I did badly and I'm resitting this year. I got an offer from Sussex a few days ago, and the entry grades were quite a bit lower than I expected so I think I'm going to put it as my firm. I applied to Sussex because I really like the sound of the course and I really like the idea of living in Brighton!

I haven't been to an open day yet (and I'm not sure if I'll have a chance now) but I visited a friend there a while ago and wasn't thrilled by the campus but the weather was horrible so that might have made it look a lot worse than it actually is. If anyones visited already, did you like it? And what accommodation looks best? I'd prefer to have an en-suite room if I'm honest...

I visited a couple of months ago but it was raining when I went as well, but one of the things that made me want to go there was the fact that theres lots of greenery around and its quite small compared to some unis, so it feels more comfortable and villagey and less industrial than others haha

I only saw two accommodations when I went because the way they did the tours was weird, but I saw Lancaster House which is one of the park house accommodations and Northfield (I think?), so I kind of got to see both sides of the spectrum in terms of cost and stuff. Although the more expensive accommodations are a bit nicer, I've heard a lot about how the vibe is a bit dead compared to other accommodations like Park Village which I put as my first choice, so tbh I think a lot depends on what sort of atmosphere you want, like places that cost a bit more (e.g. northfield, accommodations with en-suites) seem to be described as less of a social/party atmosphere
