UK ordered to pay extra €2.1bn into European Union budget by December

"Britain has been told that it must pay an additional €2.1bn (£1.7bn) into the European Union budget by the end of next month in an ultimatum certain to be used against David Cameron by the growing camp urging the UK to quit the EU.

British and European Commission officials confirmed on Thursday evening that the Treasury had been informed last week that budget contribution calculations based on gross national income adjustments carried out by Eurostat, the EU statistics agency, had exposed a massive discrepancy between what the UK had been asked to contribute and what it should be paying, because the UK economy was doing much better relative to other European economies."

You couldn't really make it up. Because the UK is not in the Euro, it is doing better than countries such as France and Germany, and as a result UK taxpayer funds will be redistributed across the continent by the international socialist bureaucrats of the EU.

How anyone can support the UK being in the EU is a joke, the UK is being bled dry by the EU and our stupid government keep giving it to them. It is very clear the UK has no power whatsoever and we are told what to do and must obey, David Cameron now very clearly will get no reforms and whilst we have millions unemployed, food banks everywhere, massive NHS deficit we have to pay billions more to the EU! time for a referendum and to leave as soon as possible

Yeah and lets add a loss of more jobs and FDI when we actually leave the EU. I think we need to stay in the free trade zone but just leave the EU. I believe Switzerland do this.

that is exactly the point the UK should only have a free trade agreement with the EU nothing else, no fees, no EU laws etc. The EU has FTA's with many countries e.g. Korea, Mexico. The UK has a £60 billion trade deficit with the EU in their favour they will never stop trading with us, we should leave EU and just have a FTA

I wonder if the eu just wants us out. I support staying in but their making camerons position untenable with idiotic moves like this.

I don't really understand the outrage about this. Presumably if the UK was doing poorly financially and other countries were doing better, then they'd be contributing more and we'd be contributing less.

Do them a deal: they can have the money if we can have the immigration reforms.
It's a bit like when Sheila's Wheels quoted me £10k a year to insure a Punto.

They just didn't want me there.
Such a waste of money.
Wow, the EU's joined the UKIP campaign then?

Even if it were possible they wouldn't sell one of the founding principles of the union for €2.1bn.

Millions unemployed - have you a source for that?

Food banks everywhere - I live in G41, could you direct me to the nearest one, I haven't seen one today and I've traveled about a bit.

NHS deficit? The NHS raises a few million from prescription charges, hardly like its ever going to make a surplus from that :s-smilie:

We have to pay billions more? We aren't in the Euro, we don't have to pay billions more do we?

Because they usually don't have to. If their job positions are threatened you can usually count on self-interest over principles.

and when is that going to happen, exactly?

The EU are sponging off-of the UK, to give more money out to Eastern European countries. The whole aim of the EU is to redistribute wealth from the richer countries to the poorer ones, make everyone equal (poor) and then create one federal state.

The sources for unemployment are the offical government unemployment figures from last week with unemployment at 2 million plus millions more on part time work. Food bank use has also tripled. The NHS desperately needs money most Brits would agree to give extra funding to the NHS than the EU.

Finally we do have to pay billions even though we aren't in the Euro, the latest outrageous increase for another £1.7 bil will take the contribution to £60 million a day (gross) and about £35 mil net. The increase the EU is forcing on the UK is more than the other 27 EU nations combined and doubled (almost triple)
This whole situation seems manufactured by the Tories. Dave says he's not paying and the public say 'Good on you Dave!'. UKIP threat averted. You've got to love politics!

We need to get the hell out of it. Too costly and controlling. We don't need Europe for trade and security. We can stand alone and have some pride and autonomy again. We can trade with Commonwealth. The EU is a corrupt institution. It was a bad idea from the start.

This would require treaty change, which means that every single member state needs to ratify it after it has been through the Council. A payment of €2bn to the EU will clearly never achieve that.
