Help with High English

I'm currently doing higher english and last year I struggled with English a lot compared to all my other subjects, I mean I did get an A but I was really just a bit lucky because I have NO idea how to do anything in English. And I'd quite like to get an A this year as well, so if you've done higher english before then can you give me some advice on close reading (how to gain marks effectively, techniques when answering q's under time limit), critical essays (how to write a good essay within the time limit on an unknown topic, and tips on memorising quotes), and creative writing?
