Standard form..

Erm, any help with finding out what the answer is? I would upload the picture of the question and my working out but I can't seem to be able to attach the picture.

So anyways the question is -

The speed of light is approximately 3*10^8. Show the time taken for light from the Sun to reach the various planets. There was a few other planets which I was able to find the time for the light travel. However, the last two planets seem to be confusing me maybe b/c it's involving recurring numbers..?

So to find time you need to divide distance by speed. Pluto's distance from the sun is 5.90*10^12.

I ended up getting 5 hours 27 minutes but have no clue on how to get the seconds. The book shows the answer is 5 hours 27 minutes and 47 seconds. I can't seem to understand how they managed to get 47 seconds. If someone could explain that would be great :biggrin:

Is this bit correct?


Apparently not :smile:

59000/3/60/60 = 5 . blah

5 hours
subtract the 5 and multiply by 60

27. blah

27 minutes
subtract the 27 and multiply by 60

giving 47 seconds

I thought my integration sticky was all we would need to deal with mangled spellings. Along came "stnadord" ...

I was just wandering could you not do this -

1.96 * 10^4 = 19666

19666/60.

I did this method for the other planets to find the time and it seemed to work.

Ohhhh, silly me. I thought if you multiplied it to 10^4 you would have 666.. instead of 0's because the 1.96 was recurring. However that's not the case.

I'm so sorry to bug you again..

But if I continued on from..

1.96* 10^4= 19600

19600/60 = 326.66666

I would then find out that 60 goes in to 326, 5 times thus giving me 5 hours. It then leaves 26.6666 remaining which is where I get 27 minutes from.

I was just wondering is this method okay to work it out? I find it baffling that it worked for all the other questions but does not seem to work for this.

now you have lost the 6s as well as the decimals
