Second year and bored of University life?

Hi,

So I'm a second year student and I'm really bored of the stereotypical University life.

I don't enjoy clubbing anymore and to be honest, I never particularly liked it in first year. However, I put myself 'out there' and went clubbing every other night to make friends and experience 'uni life' - albeit feeling painfully awkward along the way!

This year I'm really enjoying my course, I'm studying hard and actually enjoying writing essays. Weird huh? I'm also aware that placement year is next year so I'm spending alot of time working and volunteering to boost my CV. I also play tennis twice a week, football once a week and badminton once a week. I socialise with various individuals but I don't really belong to a 'friendship group' - the group I hung out with last year still club alot this year but to be honest I felt like I was always tagging along. I saw someone from last year I hung out with and he says 'I never see you around anymore' and they must think I'm now some sort of recluse because I don't enjoy clubbing?

Is it normal to feel happy socialising through sport/work/my course and not being bothered about being part of a group of friends?

Also, how is everybody else finding second year?

Nothing wrong with that. You grow up and grow out of clubbing. Getting stuck in with your course and finding other enjoyments is good for you at the end of the day. Most people don't make the most of their time (regards to placements or volunteering, doing other activities). It will probably set you up well for your placement year anyway, as chance are the people you work with won't exactly be clubbers. Most of us used to chat about sports and activities, so we had a few keen cyclists, and lots of walkers because of the area (peak district). It was a small site, but most of the other sites i've been to quite commonly have their own gyms or sport facilities, and things to get involved in like badminton or squash ladders.

I think I only properly went clubbing about five or six times during second year, but used to go to a pub most weeks and have a few quiet pints with some people. As long as you're feeling socially satisfied there are no rules on what you have to be doing to achieve that.

I'm a first year but I'm socially in the same situation as you, I'm very happy without a group of friends, I have loads of people who I talk to. Just do what's right for you
Yeah, I'm a second year and this year I just feel burnt out on clubbing and can't really be bothered with it anymore. I'm spending a lot more time on extracurricular stuff because you need more than just a degree so I never really get bored or anything; it just feels strange to not be partaking in the usual student lifestyle anymore if that makes sense.

Yes I think it's quite normal. I was pretty much the same when I was at university. I enjoyed my course and sport and most of my socialising was done on the course. I think by second year a lot of people get like this. Admittedly I wasn't interesting in the going out/clubbing etc in first year anyway and avoided it.

Yes it's normal, probably healthier too. You'll still have friends within that group, right?

Its not such a big change as people make it out to be but I've noticed a jump. My essays are having to be longer and I seem to have way more reading but thankfully my timetable is structured in a way which makes it easier for me to deal with the workload.
