Am I the only person that has lost all christmas spirit?

Am I the only one? I am sick of it, it is overated and over commercialised. I have grown to dislike it more and more each year as I have grown up. People go out and buy a overload of crap to spoil there already over spoilt unappreciative children and family members. Save that flaming money that is wasted on mainly unwated crap and put it to something constructive. Then some of the people and the january sales are just ridiculous imo.

All this build up for one day is just stupid imo.

I feel exactly the same. Christmas should have "See: Sales" underneath it in the dictionary. It's essentially the event before the lead up to the January sales, the necessary evil. There hasn't been any Christmas Spirit for as long as I've been on this planet (18 years), but it's only recently in the last 3 years that I've begun to dislike it.

The build up is what gets me. It starts in October and it's just horribly forced, commercialised nonsense from Iceland, Morrisons, ASDA etc all trying to stake a claim before the day. I think we have to accept overblown presents is part of it, but who in their right mind goes out and buys everything in October and early November, this isn't what Christmas is meant to be.

On the other hand, I think films also give us an unrealistic portrayal of Christmas. This whole idea of "Christmas cheer" and how you suddenly find yourself having a drink with Charles Bronson or someone down the pub just because it's Christmas is idealistic and untrue. There is little to no communal feeling behind the day.

My views there anyway.

I completely agree every year I feel less Christmassy and don't really feel excited by Christmas anymore.I use to not be able to get to sleep when I was a child and use to over obsess over it and buy myself loads of presents on top of the ones my parents bought me and whenever I got a present close to the time(sometimes not even that close) you would put it away for Christmas a lot of it was about trying to get a really high number of presents( probably a bit too quantity and not quantity but I did sometimes get quality presents).

I did the same for Easter trying to accumulate loads of Easter eggs stacking them up far too many to eat without becoming bored of them and ended up having to give them to my brother.

However, Christmas has loads of negative consequences my mam was and is poor She use to take out loans to afford Christmas and thus get into debt.Poor Children are made to look naughty because apparently the nicer you are the better presents you get but poor parents can't afford luxurious presents and the presents they do buy will often result in making their poverty much worse with money better spent on going towards food, bills, clothing, education etc.The whole festival is a wastage and goes directly against good financial principles which are that saving every day is good for the long term definitely not spending loads for one day that will soon be over.
I thought I lost the christmas spirit too, until I realised I could always get more whisky from Sainsburys.

Terrible jokes aside, I do sometimes get a bit disillusioned with Christmas as half the presents I buy for people will never be appreciated. Most of the stuff I receive I've specifically asked for so that's OK or me at least. I do, however, enjoy the cold, crisp, dark nights, morning frost staying until afternoon, satsumas after lunch, christmas cake, turkey sandwiches, party hats, lit fireplaces, whisky mac and seeing the few living relatives I still have. If it snows I really like that too, but that's not something that happens much where I live.

Although my parents and the job centre seem determined to stop me enjoying the whole of December and seeing my extended family.

I can hardly ever remember it. Guess I do like the Christmas Spirit, or spirits

I believe you are in the 'transition phase'. Let me explain. When you were young all you cared about was presents presents presents. SANTA! etc. Now you're older, you're not really excited, per say, for presents. Fair enough. Don't you sometimes wonder why adults are still excited for Christmas and enjoy it? Its not for the presents, its the sense of appreciation for being alive. Being able to enjoy a meal with your loved ones. Being able to see people happy. Soon you shall once again be excited, but for a whole different reason than before. Often unique to you.

You can apply the same to birthdays.

If you think that your presents aren't appreciated - possibly they're the wrong presents.

No, no, no.

It can't be that. It must be to do with the media, or corporate greed or or something, It can't be down to their own psyche.

That's not cool or trendy at all.

Hmm, never really thought about it this way. The sense of appreciation for being alive, I guess you're right, that is what I feel sometimes towards it.

I lost the spirit from the age of 12, I'd love to just stay up here in my little university room for Christmas, there's only a select few of my family members I want to see. The only reason why I'm forcing myself to go is because I want to get my overdue snuggles from my cat and dog, and of course the turkey dinner. Other than those 2 things, I couldn't care less. Christmas is overrated.

A common misconception (that Christmas starts too early). We have a reasonably established tradition in the UK that advent calendars start on Dec 1st, and that decorations tend to go up in early December. For this to be possible, they have to be available to buy (or the materials to make them have to be available) in at least early to mid November. Also, bearing in mind that December is a short month for working people.

Christmas season usually starts after Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night - that would be early to mid November. About right if you think about it, otherwise it would be crammed into a very short space of time in December and be even more stressful and provoke even more resentment from the Humbuggers.

Sometimes, yes, sometimes no. For example, my mum makes a big thing about watching Brian Cox's programs when they're on tv, so in my head (and I would have thought the same of most people) it was a good idea to buy the DVD so she can watch them again and see the extra stuff they put on DVDs... but she hasn't watched any of the DVDs I bought of them. Eventually I stopped buying them as they never even left their plastic wrapper.

I do put thought into the things I buy and try and make them appropriate to the recipient's interests (or things they've hinted at wanting). I don't just buy a best-selling book, a chocolate orange and say 'that'll do'.
I thought I was "over" Christmas for a while but I think that was just a transitional phase where I wasn't really sure what Christmas was for.

When you're a kid it's all about presents then as you get older it becomes about the day itself and spending time with your family as you get to see each other less. But when I was an older teenager, I had a job so I could buy all the stuff I wanted and I saw my family everyday so what was the big deal? But now that I'm at university I appreciate Christmas a lot more & its got back some of the magic it had when I was a child just in a different sort of way.

Christmas is, ultimately, a week off work to spend with your friends and family. If you can't make that fun, that says more about you than it says about Christmas.

I've always disliked Christmas, never had the joy about it in me, it's always the same ****, watch the Christmas specials on TV, and hope it snows this year.
