How to write or provide criteria to your mentor for a reference?

I am interested in applying for an exchange programme next summer. The application process requires a reference letter from my previous voluntary position, however my mentor has asked me to either write one myself or provide a criteria. The voluntary work, NGO & human rights, isn't really related to the exchange programme, which is about research & clinical hospital work.

I just need a general recommendation letter.

I have no idea how to go about writing one.

You can't write your own reference (you'd sound like a politician!)

They probably want a work reference from your voluntary work to see if you're a good worker for their research & clinical hospital work. Do you turn up? Do you listen? Do you work things out for yourself? Do you finish what you start? Do you get on with the other workers? That sort of thing.

A friend of mine said she'd write one for me, if all else fails.

Thank you so much, this was very helpful.
