Can I still make it into film production without a gcse/a level in drama?

So I would to go into creative media when I'm older such as video games designing and films. I'm currently studying Maths, English, Triple Science, History, French and Spanish at GCSE because I enjoy these subjects very much! At the moment I'm unsure what A Levels to take (I have to pick 4 and may drop one for A2) and what university course to go for. My dad says I should get a university degree in a 'proper' subject first so I have something to fall back onto if things don't go right, and then do a more related course. But will my lack of a drama gsce/a level affect my chances of making it? I didn't take drama gcse because although I sometimes enjoy acting, I get quite nervous and am more interested in the production of it. I've always wanted to work at Pixar studios.

Hey

I'm currently applying for post production and digital film courses at uni and I'm only going to get 2 A Levels at the end of this year - art and geography. Every university I've looked at so far that offer these courses have said they don't mind what subjects I take, as long as I achieve two A Levels so I would say that in most cases it won't matter if you don't take drama. There may be some courses that require specific A Levels so maybe look around a bit but I would say for the majority no you won't need drama. If you definitely don't want to study drama and the performing aspect of it at uni but you do want to study the production side then something similar media studies may be more useful.

Basically, you should be okay! I'm applying for editing and post production at Ravensbourne and they just need 2 A Levels regardless of subject choices!

Hope this helps

Hi elisha22,

Your father is absolutely right, a degree in a "proper" subject is a very good idea. It will not restrict you in any way (you certainly don't need any drama qualification at all) and is generally more highly regarded by employers than a media degree.

You should know that video games designing and film making are two very different and distinct careers with very little in common though!
I can relate so much. I’m going to start GSCE soon and I don’t know what to do. I want to be a film director.
