Southampton may end up being my first choice as Nottingham is a hard Uni to get into for nursing and Southampton are higher than Nottingham on the league tables. I think you still could apply to Nottingham coz you never know, they could offer you a place  York is really good for nursing as well.

Yeah, I think Southampton are the highest ranked uni for nursing that offers the child field. I think my top 5 choices are Nottingham, York, Southampton, Cardiff and Leeds but that happens to be 5 Russell Group uni's which could be a bit risky since child nursing is competitive enough as it is!

They are the highest ranked for child nursing. Those are great choices for Uni but as they are Russel Groups Unis then it would be much more competitive. But don't let that put you off !! Apply to all of the them and make sure that your personal statement is strong coz i'm sure that they'll focus more on the contents of personal statement more than entry requirements
Yeah thanks you're right  I may choose one non russell group as a 5th choice but I'll see how it goes as I have a while to decide. Theres also extra and clearing if things dont go to plan!
Hi Guys,

I've just finished my A levels, I applied for Child Nursing last year and it's very competive as there is not many places for it! Beware many people who was at my interview had been working with children in a hospital environment for years. I didn't get any offers but so glad i didn't get a place for child in the end as there is no scope and all you can do is progress in a hospital setting. Child nursing grades are ABB-BBB, they are looking for the people who are predicted those grades as there isn't many places! In my opinion if you are worried about grades, go for adult nursing as more leniant on grades as there is more places!! I still want to do something to do with children but doing the adult route first and then doing child nursing afterwards gives so much scope as when you have done your child nursing degree you are unable to progress onto adult or any other fields!! Good luck applying!

Hi, thanks for the insight

Did you find an Adult nursing course this year through extra/clearing or are you reapplying this year?
My heart is set on applying for children's nursing but I am open to maybe doing an adults course and then a conversion to childrens later if I can't a place in children's nursing

Also, do you mind me asking where you applied for?

Is it that competitive !!?? So there's a lack of progression except from in a hospital setting. Wow this is scaring me :s-smilie: I'll be predicted BBB at worst so hopefully that'll be alright. So far, i've volunteered at a nursery and i'll be doing work experience at a local hospital soon as well as volunteering at a specialist school for children with learning disabilities. I may do some mentoring at my school too. Would that be enough experience ??

Did you apply for adult nursing through clearing or extra ? Which universities did you apply for ??

I totally disagree with that statement. There is masses of scope doing paeds and you don't have to stay within a hospital setting, there are a lot of community opportunities too. If you want to work with the adults in the future, then do adult first but a lot of us only want to work with children. There seems to be a lot of ignorance around children's nursing.

Yeah I'm happy with the scope for children's nursing, I've looked at the wards in children's hospitals and there are so much variety, community nursing looks quite interesting too, at the moment I'm considering neonatal nursing but I'm staying open minded until I've had the opportunity to do placements at uni

Are you on a children's nursing course?

Great coz I got really worried for a second. Are you currently doing a children's nursing course ?
yes I am, starting my second year in September.

I really want to ask loads of questions but i'll ask the important ones.

1. Do you have tips or advice on how to write a good personal statement ?
2. What's the course like ?
3. What A levels/BTEC did you do ?
4. What Uni are you currently doing your course at and what other Unis did you apply to ?
5. What work experience or voluntary work did you do prior to the course ?
Hi Everyone,

I'm sooo glad that I found a thread specifically for those of us who want to apply for Child Nursing at Uni! I've just completed my AS year of Sixth Form studying Biology, Psychology, Sociology and English Lang and I really want to connect with current Nursing students as well as those who are applying for Sept 2015. My Uni choices are:
1) Surrey
2) CCCU
3) Bucks New
4) LSBU
5) (still researching for a fifth choice)
I would really like to specialise in Neonatal Nursing, School Nursing or Health Visiting in future? Anyone else into those paths?
Sorry I realised I do waffle on a bit!

Hey, yeah there wasn't a specific for child nursing so I decided to make one and I do biology and psychology too  Are you going to drop a subject or continue with all four ? I want to do either Neonatal nursing or Health visiting too.
Don't worry, you're not waffling
Have you started your personal statement yet ?

Hi Shanzii,
It might seem weird but I am dropping Biology. If your confident with it I would definitely do it. But my Head of Sixth Form help me confirm that Psychology is a relevant science A Level I can complete to apply for Child Nursing. Also the funny thing is:colondollar:, at my Sixth Form we all had to register onto UCAS and complete our personal statements by the end of July and so if my first draft needs work I might be able to upload it by Sept/Oct.

If you do Psychology what exam board are you with?

Hey, it's not weird to drop biology. You should only carry on with subjects which you love doing and not a lot of people like biology lol
I think i'll continue with it (I'll be doing biology, psychology and chemistry for A2 :s-smilie: - i'm going to have to work really hard).

Psychology is considered a science and it's so interesting. Wow....that's really early. I registered on UCAS but started my personal statement the week after as I had to go to summer school. That's great though ! That means that you'll be able to finish your personal statement quicker and you'd have more time to keep re-drafting it. Lucky you

My hospital work experience starts in September and my volunteering in October so unfortunately i'll be submitting mine in Nov/Dec. But at least i'll have more experience I guess.

I do AQA A spec for psychology, what board are you with ?

You seem to be in a lot of luck with your volunteering and work experience opportunities. I hope you enjoy them! I've been volunteering with my local Age UK charity shop for a bit now and have done various volunteering roles interacting and learning about children's wellbeing. I'm hoping to start a hospital work experience placement in October soon. Either in paeds or physio so fingers crossed!
Snap! I'm with AQA A for Psychology too. We're covering Eating Disorders, Aggression and Cognition. What about you?

Thank you
It may seem lucky but i'm worried that I may submit my UCAS application late :frown:
That's great. You seem to have loads of experience working with children which is really good. I filled in an application form to volunteer at a local shop and they never got back to me lol.

If you got work experince in paeds then that would be an advantage as most people can't get work experience in children's wards. My work experience is on children's ward but i'll be doing it with play specialists. Hopefully i'll get to shadow a nurse at one point.
I'm not sure yet, my psychology teacher left and i've got a new one so i'll find out in September and let you know

If I'm right you won't have to worry about sending off your application until January 2015. But what's important is just mentioning in your PS what would make you an amazing children's nurse after experiencing what it's like to be a play specialist. You'll be fine!

Oh ok, that's great news. I will definitely mention it, thank you
