The council are planning to demolish one of the tallest buildings in my town, but how would they do this? Its about 40 storeys high

Do you think it would be a public event?

Im looking forward to it....
They'll just lace the building with dynamite and cordon off the area. BOOOOM!!! Things like this are always public events.
Theyll do the same thing they do with all tall buildings in built up areas, they evacuate (possibly too strong a word, but its basically the same) the people who live very close to it for the morning of the drop. The building is filled with explosives in such a way that it falls straight down onto itself, normally by blasting out the main supports of the building. And yes I'm sure there will be loads of people around to watch.

40 storeys? ^o) That's the same height as 30 St Mary Axe and just short of the Natwest tower in London.
Are we talking about a residential tower block?
They'll cordon off the immediate area and evacuate residents from around the tower (with a radius just slightly more than the height of the tower).
They'll rig the support columns in the bottom 2 or 3 floors with demolition charges. Theoretically, they'll all go bang and the tower will just come down vertically, near enough in its own footprint.

What town are you in?

Tall buildings are not always blown up, many are deconstructed floor by floor using machinery because they are too close to nearby buildings to do a safe blowdown. This process takes weeks or months.

It will probably be deconstructed slightly, and then probably blown up by a specialist crew. If you want to be involved in this (and earn some good money) try Civil Engineering

nb No bias here honest
